  1. 1. Interaction of cyclotides and bacteria : A study of the cyclotide action and the bacterial reaction

    Author : Sohaib Zafar Malik; Ulf Göransson; Dan Andersson; William Shafer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cyclotides; cycloviolacin O2; cycloviolacin O3; cycloviolacin O19; antimicrobial peptide resistance; Salmonella enterica; Eschericia coli; Viola odorata; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy;

    Abstract : The growing problem of antibiotic resistance and the lack of promising prospective antibiotics have forced us to search for new classes of antibiotics. Among the candidates to develop into future antibacterials are antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). READ MORE

  2. 2. Systematics of Lactobacillus spp. of probiotic potential

    Author : Alejandra Vasquez; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik; mycology; virology; bacteriology; Microbiology; bacteria; molecular-based identification; probiotics; systematics;

    Abstract : Lactobacillus is a heterogeneous bacterial genus comprising at present 91 species. The high species number often makes classification and identification difficult, especially as the taxonomy to a high degree has been based on phenotypical traits. READ MORE

  3. 3. Bacterial identification by the 16S rRNA gene

    Author : Tobias Olofsson; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; mykologi; virologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; bacteriology; 16S rRNA; Microbiology; Identification; Bacteria; bakteriologi;

    Abstract : The identification and classification of bacteria was initially performed with morphological methods applied on cultivated bacteria. It was not until the mid 1970s, when sequences of ribosomal RNA were discovered to be useful for bacterial evolution, that a new era started. This method showed to be far more accurate for bacterial identification. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental filtering of bacteria in low productivity habitats

    Author : Inga Richert; Stefan Bertilsson; Annelie Wendeberg; Lise Øvreås; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteria; environmental filtering; diversity; ecosystem service; hydrocarbon utilization; Southern Ocean; sediment; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Microbes fulfill important ecosystem functions by contributing as drivers of global nutrient cycles. Their distribution patterns are mainly controlled by environmental heterogeneities. So far, little is known about the mode of action of particular environmental drivers on the microbiota, particularly in low productivity habitats. READ MORE

  5. 5. Identification of bacteria associated with malaria mosquitoes - Their characterisation and potential use

    Author : Jenny Lindh; Ingrid Faye; Marcelo Jacobs-Lorena; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Malaria; mosquito; Anopheles; bacteria; paratransgenics; semiochemicals; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The use of transformed bacteria to stop or kill disease-causing agents in the gut of vector insects is called paratransgenics. Two of the major steps in creating a paratransgenic Anopheles mosquito, unable to spread the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria, are to find a bacterium suitable for the purpose and a way to introduce the transformed bacterium into mosquitoes in the field.
