  1. 1. α-Cell signalling in glucose-regulated glucagon secretion

    Author : Qian Yu; Anders Tengholm; Erik Gylfe; Sebastian Barg; David W Piston; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islets; glucagon; insulin; somatostatin; ATP; cAMP; Ca2 ; GHB; oscillations; α-cell; β-cell; δ-cell; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Glucagon is a blood glucose-elevating hormone released from α-cells in the islets of Langerhans during hypoglycaemia. Glucagon is critical for glucose homeostasis and inappropriate regulation of its secretion underlies both impaired counter-regulation of hypoglycaemia and chronic hyperglycaemia in diabetes patients. Abstract : A balanced tear film is essential for a healthy ocular surface. Insufficient tear production may result in dry eye, a common disorder in the elderly population. Dry eye causes significant discomfort in the patients and may lead to visual impairment and ocular infections. READ MORE

  3. 3. Computerized Cell and Tissue Analysis

    Author : Azadeh Fakhrzadeh; Gunilla Borgefors; Cris Luengo Hendriks; Lena Holm; Nasir Rajpoot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Image processing; Cell; Tissue; Segmentation; Classification; Histology; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : The latest advances in digital cameras combined with powerful computer software enable us to store high-quality microscopy images of specimen. Studying hundreds of images manually is very time consuming and has the problem of human subjectivity and inconsistency. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of cAMP and Ca2+ signaling in pancreatic islet cells

    Author : Hongyan Shuai; Anders Tengholm; Erik Gylfe; Sebastian Barg; Albert Salehi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pancreatic islet; insulin; glucagon; somatostatin; pancreatic polypeptide; exendin- 9-39 ; GLP-1; GIP; ATP; adenosine; cAMP; Ca2 ; β-cell; α-cell; δ-cell; PP-cell;

    Abstract : The blood glucose-lowering and -elevating hormones insulin and glucagon are released from the pancreatic islet β- and α-cells, respectively. The intracellular messengers Ca2+ and cAMP have central roles in controlling the secretion of both hormones, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic Mechanisms during Terminal Cell Fate Specification in the Drosophila CNS

    Author : Johannes Stratmann; Stefan Thor; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Christos Samakovlis; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Specification of the many unique neuronal subtypes found in the nervous system depends on spatiotemporal cues and terminal selector cascades, mostly acting in sequential combinatorial codes of transcription factors (TFs) to dictate cell fate. Out of 10,000 cells in the Drosophila embryonic ventral nerve cord (VNC), only 28 cells selectively express Nplp1. READ MORE
