16. Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Spirocyclization and Carbonylation Reactions : Ligands Targeting the Angiotensin II Type 2 Receptor
Abstract : Palladium(0)-catalyzed chemistry represents one of the most important methods for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds, which are ubiquitous in organic compounds. The first part of this thesis describes the palladium(0)-catalyzed diastereoselective Mizoroki-Heck reaction of Vince lactam-derived precursors for the formation of spiroindolines (paper I) and spirooxindoles, which are scaffolds present in several natural products with interesting biological activity. 17. Microbial modulation of metabolic diseases
Abstract : The gut microbiota, the ensemble of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract, and the host have a mutualist relationship. Alterations of this delicate equilibrium can lead to changes in microbiota composition and/or function leading to the onset of metabolic diseases (e.g., type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases). 18. Some Aspects of Physicochemical Properties of DNA and RNA
Abstract : This thesis is based on nine research publications (I – IX) on structure and reactivity of RNA vis-à-vis DNA. The DNA and RNA are made of flexible pentose sugar units, polyelectrolytic phosphodiester backbone, and heterocyclic nucleobases. DNA stores our genetic code, whereas RNA is involved both in protein biosynthesis and catalysis. READ MORE

19. Organocatalytic Transformations with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes - An Investigation of Ionic Liquids as NHC Precatalysts and Aerobic Oxidative Esterifications
Abstract : The call for more sustainable processes in the chemical society has led to the development of the field of green chemistry. The Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry serve as guidelines for the design of processes. READ MORE

20. Mechanistic Studies of Dinuclear Metalloenzymes - A Model Approach
Abstract : With the goal to study the mechanisms of dinuclear metalloenzymes, a new line of synthetic and computational models were prepared and studied. Mixed imidazole and carboxylate multidentate complexes were synthesized to better simulate carboxylate-rich ligand environments. READ MORE
