  1. 1. Neurotoxicity of β-lactam antibiotics : experimental kinetic and neurophysiological studies

    Author : Silvia E. Schliamser; Ragnar Norrby; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; benzylpenicillin; blood-brain barrier; ß-lactam antibiotics; CSF; CNS; EEG; imipenem cilastatin; FCE 22101; meningitis; neurotoxicity of; silent-second; thiopental; transport system; uraemia;

    Abstract : The neurotoxic potential of intravenous administered benzylpenicillin (BPC) was studied in rabbits with intact blood-CNS barriers and rabbits with experimental E. coli meningitis. At onset of epileptogenic EEG activity or seizures, serum, CSF and brain tissue were collected for assay of BPC. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pharmacodynamic effects of antibiotics on growing and nongrowing bacteria

    Author : Erik Svensson; Peter Larsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to study antibiotic effects on nongrowing baCteria and to study the development of resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium which is often found in biofilm infections. The antibiotic effect on biofilm infections is generally weak, which probably is due to decreased growth rate of the bacteria. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pharmacodynamic effects of antibiotics : studies on bacterial morphology, initial killing, postantibiotic effect and effecitive regrowth time

    Author : Håkan Hanberger; Otto Cars; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Pharmacodynamics of antibiotics deals with time course of drug activity and mechanisms of action of drugs on bacteria. In this thesis pharmacodynamic parameters have been studied after brief exposure of gram-positive bacteria to daptomycin, imipenem or vancomycin and after short exposure of gram-negative bacteria to amikacin, ampicillin, aztreonam, cefepime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, imipenem, mecillinal,11, or piperacillin. 4. 4. Studies on the molecular mechanisms of resistance to fluoroquinolones and carbapenems in selected bacterial species

    Author : Nagwa Mustafa El Amin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The emergence of mutant bacteria with multi-resistant phenotype, no longer responsive to any of the available therapeutic agents is a growing concern. We have investigated the resistance mechanisms to two classes of antibacterials with broad spectrum of activity, carbapenems and fluoroquinolones. READ MORE

  5. 5. Carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    Author : Christian Giske; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Carbapenem (imipenem and meropenem) resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is increasing, with global resistance rates approaching 20%. The most common resistance mechanisms are down-regulation of the porin OprD, and increased activity of multi-drug efflux pumps, primarily MexAB-OprM. READ MORE
