  1. 1. Effects of Complement Opsonization of HIV on Dendritic Cells : and Implications for the Immune Response

    Author : Rada Ellegård; Marie Larsson; Jorma Hinkula; Johan D Söderholm; William Paxton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HIV; dendritic cells; complement; innate immune response; TLR signaling; T cell activation; NK cells; inflammation; antiviral response; immune evasion;

    Abstract : Dendritic cells are key players during HIV pathogenesis, and shape both the immediate immune response at the site of infection as well as directing the adaptive immune response against the virus. HIV has developed a plethora of immune evasion mechanisms that hijack dendritic cell functions, suppressing their ability to mount an accurate immune response and exploiting them for efficient viral transfer to target T cells. 2. 2. Analysis of Complement Deficiency States. With Focus on Molecular Characterization of C4 and Properdin Deficiency

    Author : Gunilla Nordin Fredrikson; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mycology; virology; bacteriology; Complement C4; Complement; Complement Screening; Deficiency; Meningococcal Disease; Properdin; Properdin Expression; Microbiology; Sequencing; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Complement deficiency is associated with an increased risk for invasive infection and immune complex disease. Screening for identification of complement-deficient patients is essential and a new ELISA-based procedure for detection of complement deficiency is described. READ MORE

  3. 3. Feedback Enhancement of Antibody Responses via Complement and Fc Receptors

    Author : Jörgen Dahlström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Mouse; transgenic knockout; immune regulation; B lymphocytes; Fc receptors; complement; IgG; IgM; IgE; Fc-gamma-RI; Fc-gamma-RII; Fc-gamma-RIII; CR1; CR2; CD21; CD35; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Pathology; patologi;

    Abstract : IgG, IgM and IgE in complex with antigen have the capacity to regulate specific immune responses. In this investigation, the role of Fc receptors for IgG (FcγRI, FcγRII and FcγRIII) and complement receptors 1 and 2 (CR1/2) for antibody-mediated enhancement of antibody responses are investigated. 4. 4. Haemophilus influenzae adhesins and the innate immune response

    Author : Elena Ronander; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; Haemophilus influenzae; Haemophilus surface fibrils; complement; innate immune response; protein E; respiratory epithelium; adhesins;

    Abstract : Haemophilus influenzae is a human specific Gram-negative respiratory tract pathogen. Encapsulated H. influenzae strains exist in six different serotypes a-f, of which type b (Hib) is the most virulent. Hib is protected by the polysaccharide capsule when invading the blood circulaton and may cause diseases such as meningitis and epiglottitis. READ MORE

  5. 5. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms

    Author : Lillemor Melander Skattum; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; C3 nephritic factors; GM allotypes; C1q autoantibodies; serum bactericidal activity; Neisseria meningitidis; idiopathic sudden hearing loss; complement; Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis;

    Abstract : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). READ MORE
