11. Glucose metabolism in patients with exocrine pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Abstract : Carc.inoma of the exocrine pancreas is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the Western world and the survival rate is one of the lowest for cancers of any site. Pancreatic cancer is characterized by pronounced, early cachexia and frequent metabolic complications. READ MORE

12. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke
Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 13. Automated Tissue Image Analysis Using Pattern Recognition
Abstract : Automated tissue image analysis aims to develop algorithms for a variety of histological applications. This has important implications in the diagnostic grading of cancer such as in breast and prostate tissue, as well as in the quantification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers that may help assess the risk of recurrence and the responsiveness of tumors to endocrine therapy. 14. Image Analysis Methods and Tools for Digital Histopathology Applications Relevant to Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Abstract : In 2012, more than 1.6 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed and about half a million women died of breast cancer. The incidence has increased in the developing world. The mortality, however, has decreased. READ MORE

15. Studies on Tissue Factor with Focus on Cell Signaling and Cancer
Abstract : This thesis have explored the functions of the protein Tissue Factor (TF), which together with its ligand coagulation factor VII/VIIa (FVII/FVIIa) forms a proteolytic complex that functions in initiation of blood coagulation and activation of cell signaling. In paper I, the mechanisms behind the observation that TF/FVIIa signaling protects cells from apoptosis were further investigated.
