1. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 2. Enzymatic and Immunological Detection Principles for Environmental and Biological Applications
Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to develop new analytical detection principles based on enzymatic and immunological reactions for sensitive, selective, cost-effective and high sample through-put detection devices. The thesis presents the basic elements and reaction paths necessary for the construction and development of enzyme based amperometric biosensors and immunoassays. READ MORE

3. Immune Changes in Pregnancy : A Survey of some Immunological Variables in Normal and Complicated Pregnancies
Abstract : The maternal systemic immune response during pregnancy is only fragmentarily understood. An adequate immune response to the gestational product is of vital importance for a successful pregnancy. READ MORE

4. The kynurenine pathway and development of schizophrenia : immunological and genetic aspects
Abstract : Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with symptoms ranging from hallucinations to poor social functioning and cognitive deficits. Despite decades of research, the etiology of the disease remains puzzling. Genetic aberrations as well as exposure to infection during early life are associated with an increased risk for development of the disease. READ MORE

5. Aspects of the role of mineral oil as immunological adjuvants in rheumatoid arthritis
Abstract : Environmental factors are likely contributing factors in the development of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease, for which etiologic factors are still poorly known. Mineral oils are efficient adjuvants which increase immunological responses and are used in animal immunization and for induction of different experimental autoimmune diseases including arthritis.
