  1. 1. Polymyositis and dermatomyositis : inflammation, muscle structure and immunosuppressive treatment

    Author : Ingela Loell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are chronic, inflammatory disorders characterized by muscle weakness, low muscle endurance and by inflammation in skeletal muscle tissues. The pathogenesis is not completely understood and several mechanisms are believed to be involved. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aloe barbadensis Mill. as a therapeutic option for irritable bowel syndrome

    Author : Bani Ahluwalia; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aloe; Microbiota; Irritable Bowel Syndrome etiology; Irritable Bowel Syndrome therapy; Aloe barbadensis Mill.; Aloe; irritable bowel syndrome; metabolites; microbiota; prebiotic; immunosuppressive;

    Abstract : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic and prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder, with an incompletely understood pathophysiology. Because of the disease complexity and heterogeneity, the currently available treatment options for IBS are limited. READ MORE

  3. 3. Renal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Diabetes : Experimental Studies in the Rat

    Author : Jan Melin; Bengt Rippe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; diabetes mellitus; ischemia reperfusion; rat; end-stage renal disease; inflammation; fibrosis; hyaluronan; CD44; treatment; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the leading causes of end stage renal failure. An increased susceptibility to renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-injury was found in DM rats. Unilateral renal ischemia for as short as 20 minutes led to an irreversible progressive injury in DM kidneys, whereas the injury in non-DM kidneys was almost reversible. READ MORE

  4. 4. Membranous Nephropathy - Challenges in diagnostics and treatment

    Author : Jennie Lönnbro-Widgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glomerulonephritis; Membranous nephropathy; Proteinuria; Phospholipase A2 receptor; Cancer; End-stage renal disease;

    Abstract : The variability in the pathogenesis, clinical presentation and outcome of membranous nephropathy (MN) poses major clinical challenges and raises different questions, both regarding diagnostics and treatment of patients with MN. The aims of this thesis were therefore to examine: 1) differences in the glomerular expression of different IgG subclasses and phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) between patients with idiopathic and malignancy-associated MN; 2) treatment pattern of patients with idiopathic MN; and 3) if the serum PLA2R antibody level at diagnosis can be used as a prognostic marker. 5. 5. Preservation of vaccine-induced long-term B cell memory and the effects of immunosuppressive treatment

    Author : Hanna M Ingelman-Sundberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Immune memory after vaccination is largely dependent on the combination of antibody production from long-lived plasma cells, and a supporting pool of antigen-primed memory B cells. It has been observed that individuals with certain immunosuppressive conditions or treatments have a weakened B cell memory, but the mechanisms behind remain elusive. READ MORE
