  1. 6. Footbridge Dynamics : Human-Structure Interaction

    Author : Emma Zäll; Raid Karoumi; Mahir Ülker-Kaustell; Andreas Andersson; Peter Van den Broeck; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Dynamics; vibration; footbridge; pedestrian bridge; human-structure interaction; runner; running loads; simplified models; Dynamik; vibration; gångbro; människa-bro-interaktion; löpare; löparlaster; förenklade modeller; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Byggvetenskap;

    Abstract : For aesthetic reasons and due to an increased demand for cost-effective and environmentally friendly civil engineering structures, there is a trend in designing light and slender structures. Consequently, many modern footbridges are susceptible to excessive vibrations caused by human-induced loads. READ MORE

  2. 7. Mathematical Simulation of Vehicle-Pedestrian Collisions: Influence of Vehicle Impact Speed and Front-End Structure on the Dynamic Responses of Child and Adult Pedestrians

    Author : Xuejun Liu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; child pedestrian; impact biomechanics; mathematical model; vehicle front-end structure; safety countermeasure; impact speed; parametric study; scaling method;

    Abstract : The development of effective countermeasures for pedestrian protection requires an understanding of how the impact speed and front-end design of the vehicle influence the injury risks of pedestrians. Because of the high involvement of children in pedestrian accidents, there is also a need for child pedestrian mathematical models. READ MORE

  3. 8. Ensemble methods for protein structure prediction

    Author : Marcin J. Skwark; Arne Elofsson; Michael Tress; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein structure prediction; model quality assessment; contact prediction; homology modeling; ab-initio prediction; consensus prediction; structural bioinformatics; bioinformatics; protein structure; biokemi; inriktning teoretisk kemi; Biochemistry with Emphasis on Theoretical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Proteins play an essential role in virtually all of life's processes. Their function is tightly coupled to the three-dimensional structure they adopt.Solving protein structures experimentally is a complicated, time- and resource-consuming endeavor. READ MORE

  4. 9. Order and interfaces in epitaxial heterostructures : Structure and magnetism

    Author : Anna L. Ravensburg; Vassilios Kapaklis; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Gunnar K. Pálsson; Martina Müller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The work in this dissertation is devoted to investigating order and interfaces in epitaxial heterostructures. To achieve that the software tool box GenL was developed for simulating and fitting x-ray diffraction patterns from epitaxial thin films, which is used to access structural information on the length scales of interfaces and atomic bonds. 5. 10. Distribution and Chemical Diversity of Cyclotides from Violaceae : Impact of Structure on Cytotoxic Activity and Membrane Interactions

    Author : Robert Burman; Ulf Göransson; Lars Bohlin; William Gerwick; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cyclotide; Violaceae; Viola; Cytotoxic; Mechanism; In vivo; Structure-activity; Membrane; Mass spectrometry; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : During the last decade there has been increased interest in the cyclotide protein family, which consist of a circular chain of approximately 30 amino acids, including six cysteines that form three disulfide bonds, arranged in a cyclic cystine knot motif. This thesis gives new insights in cyclotide distribution and occurrence in the plant family Violaceae, structure-activity relationships for cytotoxic effects, membrane disruption and adsorption on lipid membranes, and evaluates toxicity and anti-tumor activity in vivo.
