  1. 6. Mechanical optimization of orthopaedic bone screw constructs

    Author : Yijun Zhou; Cecilia Persson; Benedikt Helgason; Philip Procter; Richie Gill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Trabecular bone; screw implant; explicit finite element modelling; computed tomography; numerical optimization; neural network; hydrogel; Engineering Science with specialization in Biomedical Engineering; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot medicinsk teknik;

    Abstract : Orthopaedic screw implants are crucial in surgical procedures for bone structures, with a longstanding issue being screw loosening. Improving screw stability requires an enhanced understanding of the bone-implant interactions and associated failure mechanisms. This knowledge can be used to optimize screw designs. READ MORE

  2. 7. Electromagnetic Modeling and Design of Medical Implants and Devices

    Author : Oskar Talcoth; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Implant Safety; Lead Heating; Pacemakers; Thin-wire Approximation; Convex Relaxation; Optimal Sensor Placement; Optimal Measurements; Helix; Sensor Selection; MR Safety; Magnetic Tracking; Fisher Information Matrix;

    Abstract : This thesis covers two topics in biomedical electromagnetics: pacemaker lead heating in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optimization of sensorpositions in magnetic tracking.The electromagnetic part of pacemaker lead heating during MRI is a resonant phenomenon which is complicated by, among other factors, the wide range of length scales involved in the problem. 3. 8. Osteoarthritis of the Hip and Uncemented Total Hip Arthroplasty : Effects of Immediate Weight Bearing on Implant Stability, Bone Mineral Density, and Body Composition

    Author : Olof Wolf; Hans Mallmin; Sune Larsson; Jan Milbrink; Per Mattsson; Per Adolphson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Osteoarthritis of the hip; uncemented; total hip arthroplasty; stability; RSA; BMD; DXA; body composition; weight bearing; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : The initial recommendation for the postoperative regime after uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) was 6-12 weeks of partial weight bearing (PWB) to obtain a stable implant position during bone ingrowth. In recent years patients with uncemented THA have increasingly practiced full weight bearing (FWB) after surgery, which has largely been based on clinical experience rather than on scientific evidence. 4. 9. Soft tissue integration to dental implants

    Author : Maria Welander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; connective tissue; dental implants; epithelium; gold alloy; histology; peri-implant mucosa; subcrestal placement; titanium; zirconia;

    Abstract : Soft tissue integration is a prerequisite for implant success. The role of the soft tissue barrier at implants is to provide an effective seal that protects the underlying bone and prevents access for microorganisms and their products. READ MORE

  5. 10. Wireless Communication with Medical Implants: Antennas and Propagation

    Author : Anders J Johansson; Institutionen för elektro- och informationsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; medical implant communication; electromagnetic propagation; biomedical telemetry; antennas in matter; MICS; Electronics; Elektronik;

    Abstract : With the increased sophistication of medical implants, there is a growing need for flexible high-speed communication with the implant from outside the body. Today the communication is done by an inductive link between the implant and an external coil at a low carrier frequency. READ MORE
