6. On large deviations and design of efficient importance sampling algorithms
Abstract : This thesis consists of four papers, presented in Chapters 2-5, on the topics large deviations and stochastic simulation, particularly importance sampling. The four papers make theoretical contributions to the development of a new approach for analyzing efficiency of importance sampling algorithms by means of large deviation theory, and to the design of efficient algorithms using the subsolution approach developed by Dupuis and Wang (2007). 7. Good caring : Patient realities and staff perceptions
Abstract : Cancer patient and staff perceptions of the importance of caring behaviors were identifiedby the Caring Assessment Instrument (CARE-Q, forced and free response formats).Patients' emotional distress was investigated by the Hospital Anxiety and DepressionScale (HADS) and open ended questions. 8. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation
Abstract : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south. 9. The importance of eHealth innovations : Lessons about patient accessible information
Abstract : Access to digital information and communication has an increasing importance in both the work of healthcare professionals and in patients’ everyday life and has transformed what we do and how we carry out activities. It changes the way in which healthcare is delivered, how information is exchanged within and between organizations and how patients and other actors access and manage information. READ MORE

10. Characterization of aluminum in environmental systems using X-ray absorption and vibrational spectroscopy : The importance of organic matter
Abstract : The fate and behavior of many metals in the environment are highly dependent on interactions with natural organic matter (NOM), which is abundant in most soils and surface waters. The complexation with NOM can influence the speciation of the metals by affecting their hydrolysis and solubility. READ MORE
