  1. 1. Acetylation of Solid Wood. Wood Properties and Process Development

    Author : Pia Larsson Brelid; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microwave heating; deformation; wood; hardness; adhesive bonding; power penetration depth; shear strength; delamination; acetylation; pH; bending strength; dielectric properties; stability;

    Abstract : The influence of acetylation on selected wood properties has been determined for Scandinavian pine and spruce wood, in order to predict the behavior of acetylated wood when it is used in different applications. Only minor differences in both bending strength and the modulus of elasticity were obtained for acetylated wood when compared with unmodified wood, and can, for practical applications, be considered unaltered. 2. 2. DIFFUSION OF IONS IN WOOD

    Author : Reddysuresh Kolavali; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; lithium chloride; impregnation; diffusion; Norway spruce; local concentration profiles; experimental methodology; micro-cracks; wood; Donnan effect;

    Abstract : Wood sourced from well managed plantations or forests, is a renewable material with many advantages over non-renewable (fossil) material, and also wood lignocelluloses are the only type of biomass that is a seasonal-independent product. In addition to direct utilization as a building material, major uses of wood are currently for making pulp and paper products, and fuel. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effectiveness and Evaluation of Wood Protection against Biological Deterioration Caused by Filamentous Fungi

    Author : Olena Myronycheva; Olov Karlsson; Lone Ross; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Träteknik; Wood Science and Engineering;

    Abstract : Developing a holistic understanding of the biological deterioration of wooden material by fungi in the laboratory and outdoor conditions requires the development of new assessment procedures and tools that allow describing the process with maximum precision and accuracy. Environmental biodeterioration is a complex process including a combination of physical, chemical and biological changes, with many uncertainties limiting the predictability and effectiveness of selected preservatives after laboratory tests. 4. 4. Implication of chemical deterioration on mechanical performance of wood

    Author : Shahin Norbakhsh; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The oak wood of the 17th century warship Vasa has shown significant changes in the chemical and mechanical properties as compared to recent oak. The most important factors contributing to these changes are the incorporation of iron compounds during waterlogging and the uptake of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in the course of the preservation treatment. 5. 5. Diffusive Mass Transport of Ions in Wood

    Author : Reddysuresh Kolavali; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sorption; wood; mass transport; impregnation;

    Abstract : Understanding the conditions that control the mass transfer of various chemicals/ions in wood is of great importance when it is subjected to various processes. Homogeneous impregnation with chemicals/ions, for example, increases the uniformity of the treatments to which the wood is subjected, reduces reaction times and may increase the yield of the final products.
