  1. 6. Studies on Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERVs) with Special Focus on ERV3

    Author : Ann-Catrin Andersson; Bengt Widegren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; human endogenous retroviruses; HERV; ERV3; expression; in situ hybridisation; real-time PCR; U-937; retinoic acid.; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Pathology; patologi;

    Abstract : Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) represent approximately 7% of the human genome. This investigation was focused on one particular HERV, ERV3, with the main purpose of characterising its gene expression patterns and genomic distribution of ERV3-like sequences. READ MORE

  2. 7. Studies of a Proteinase-activated Cell Surface Receptor

    Author : Sverker Nystedt; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; receptor; proteinase; PAR-2; molecular cloning; in situ hybridisation; Expression; G-protein; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : The G protein-coupled receptors form one of the largest families of proteins involved in signalling between cells. It contains receptors for molecules as diverse as biogenic amines, glycoproteins and enzymes. The manuscripts included in this thesis together describe the initial characterisation of a previously unknown receptor of this class. READ MORE

  3. 8. Short-chain retinol dehydrogenases/reductases : Involvement in retinoid metabolism and expression in embryonic and adult mouse

    Author : Paulina Tuvendal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; -; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; Toxicology; toxikologi;

    Abstract : Retinoids are needed in the embryo to ensure proper development and in the adult forvision, maintenance of epithelia and sperm production. Retinol is oxidised within the cell generating retinal and, irreversibly, retinoic acid. READ MORE

  4. 9. Improving biomarker assessment in breast pathology

    Author : Stephanie Robertson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The accuracy of prognostic and therapy-predictive biomarker assessment in breast tumours is crucial for management and therapy decision in patients with breast cancer. In this thesis, biomarkers used in clinical practice with emphasise on Ki67 and HER2 were studied using several methods including immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridisation, gene expression assays and digital image analysis, with the overall aim to improve routine biomarker evaluation and clarify the prognostic potential in early breast cancer. 5. 10. Genetic characterisation of novel resistance alleles to stem rust and stripe rust in wheat-alien introgression lines

    Author : Mahbubjon Rahmatov; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L., 2n = 6x = 42, AABBDD) is one of the most important food crops world-wide, but is attacked by many diseases and pests that cause significant yield losses. Globally, stem rust (Sr) (Puccinia graminis f. sp. READ MORE
