  1. 1. Causes and consequences of individual variation in energy turnover rates

    Author : Johan Nilsson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; energy turnover rate; metabolic rate; BMR; RMR; life history; oxidative stress; carotenoids; incubation; Parus palustris; Cyanistes caeruleus; Taeniopygia guttata;

    Abstract : Individual energy turnover rates can vary remarkably, even within a species. In this thesis I study the causes and consequences of this pronounced variation and show that individual energy turnover rates can be affected by a large number of factors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Parental and embryonic behaviours in precocial birds

    Author : Irene Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pheasants; growth rate; oxygen consumption; hatch synchronization; incubation behaviour; nest predation; physical condition; Egg laying; primary sex ratio; mallards; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with behaviours during reproduction in precocial birds, both from the perspective of the female and of the embryos. Female pheasants in good physical condition laid larger eggs and produced a higher proportion of daughters than females in poor condition. READ MORE

  3. 3. Human papillomavirus and cervical carcinoma in situ : implications for future screening

    Author : Nathalie Ylitalo; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : cervical carcinoma in situ; human papillomavirus; HPV 16; quantitative PCR; archival smears; viral load; incubation period; smoking; oral contraceptive use;

    Abstract : The principal aim of this thesis was to study the temporal relationship between human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV 16) infection and cervical carcinoma in situ, particularly focusing on the effect of viral load. Other aims were to study the role of additional factors, especially smoking and oral contraceptive use, in cervical carcinogenesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on Polysaccharides from some Gram-Negative Bacteria

    Author : Kurt Samuelsson; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacteria; chemical methods; food infections; polysaccharides; salmonella; Information Systems; Informatik;

    Abstract : In this survey structural studies on some polysaccharides isolated from the families of Enterobachteriaceae (Klebsiella and Salmonella) and Parvobacteriaceae (Yersinia) will be discussed. The occurence of some rare or not earlier reported deoxysugars is demonstrated, namely, 6-deoxy-D-manno-heptose, 3-deoxy-L-glycero-pentulosonic acid and five of the isomers of 3,6-dideoxy-hexoses.
