6. Direct and indirect magnetocaloric properties of first- and second-order phase transition materials
Abstract : The energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative cooling technology based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is discussed in this thesis. The thesis has two major parts, one devoted to material characterization and the other to instrument development. READ MORE

7. Mechanisms for the Influence from Ice Nucleus Aerosols on Clouds and their Indirect Effects: Cloud Modelling
Abstract : The role of multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) as ice nucleating particles (INPs), and of ice formation processes such as time-dependent freezing of various INPs, and various secondary ice production(SIP) mechanisms in overall ice concentration has been evaluated in a range of cloud systems by simulating them numerically with the state-of-the-art ‘Aerosol-Cloud’ (AC) model in a 3D mesoscale domain. Also, the mechanismsof aerosol indirect effects (AIEs) arising from anthropogenic INPs, and the responses to these AIEs from time-dependent INP freezing and SIP processes are investigated in the simulated clouds. 8. Dark Matter in the Solar System, Galaxy, and Beyond
Abstract : There is evidence that dark matter constitutes a majority of the Universe's matter content. Yet, we are ignorant about its nature. Understanding dark matter requires new physics, possibly in the form of a new species of fundamental particles. READ MORE

9. Characterization and densification of carbonized lignocellulosic biomass
Abstract : This thesis focuses on developing two main areas: characterization and densification of carbonized lignocellulosic biomass. Thermally treated biomass undergoes changes that enrich the content of carbon in the remaining solid fraction. READ MORE

10. Axionlike particles, quantum loops, and supernovae : The role of quantum loop corrections for astrophysical ALPs
Abstract : In this thesis the quantum field theory and astrophysical phenomenology of axionlike particles (ALPs) are studied. The effective field theory of ALPs is reviewed with a special focus on quantum loops, the renormalization group equations, and the equivalent forms of the interaction between ALPs and fermions.
