6. Investigation of RNase P active site residues and catalytic domain interaction
Abstract : RNase P is an essential endoribonuclease responsible for the maturation of the tRNA 5’end. The RNase P family encompasses the ribozyme based, RNase P RNP, and proteinaceous RNase P (PRORP). The ribozyme based RNase P is widely distributed in most species while PRORP has so far mainly been found in some eukaryotic cells. READ MORE

7. Modeling and experimental characterization of large biaxial strains and induced anisotropy in pearlitic rail steel
Abstract : Large shear strains accumulate in the near-surface region under the running band of railway rails. In this region, rolling contact fatigue cracks often initiate, causing major problems for the railway industry. READ MORE

8. The effect of spatial and temporal dose distributions on radiation-induced side effects in the lung
Abstract : In radiotherapy (RT), the aim is to kill all malignant cells in a tumor or to render them incapable of further division and multiplication without producing damage to the normal tissues surrounding the tumor. To achieve this, both the spatial and temporal distribution of dose delivery are important for optimizing the treatment. READ MORE

9. Empirical Modeling of Solar Induced Variations of Nitric Oxide in the Upper Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere
Abstract : Nitric Oxide (NO) is produced by solar photolysis and auroral activity in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere region and can, via transport processes, eventually impact the ozone layer in the stratosphere. This thesis uses measurements of NO taken between 2004 and 2016 by the Odin Sub Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) to build an empirical model which links the prevailing solar and auroral conditions with the measured number density of NO. 10. Essays on the Infestation of Lake Victoria by the Water Hyacinth
Abstract : This thesis consists of four essays that seek to estimate the abundance of the water hyacinth in Lake Victoria during the 1990s and analyse its effects on the catchability of fish, estimate the elasticities of catch with respect to the various components of effort in lake Victoria fisheries, and estimate the welfare costs of electricity outages. In the first essay, data on the extent of water hyacinth mat coverage collected from a number of reports and surveys is used to fit time trend water hyacinth mats growth curves for the three sections of Lake Victoria.
