  1. 1. Superabsorbent Polymers from the Cell Wall of Zygomycetes Fungi

    Author : Akram Zamani; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chitosan; cell wall; chitin; polyphosphates; dilute sulfuric acid; zygomycetes fungi;

    Abstract : The present thesis presents new renewable, antimicrobial and biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), produced from the cell wall of zygomycetes fungi. The cell wall was characterized and chitosan, being one of the most important ingredients, was extracted, purified, and converted to SAP for use in disposable personal care products designed for absorption of different body fluids. 2. 2. Fungi-based biorefinery model for food industry waste : progress toward a circular economy

    Author : Pedro Souza Filho; Satinder Kaur Brar; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; filamentous fungi; circular economy; biorefinery; food industry; fungal biomass; bioplastic; resource recovery; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : The food industry, one of the most important industrial sectors worldwide, generates large amounts of biodegradable waste with high organic load. In recent years, the traditional management methods to treat this waste (e.g., landfilling) have been considered not suitable because they do not exploit the potential of the waste material. 3. 3. Fungi-Based Biorefinery : Valorization of industrial residuals and techno-economic evaluation

    Author : Gülru Bulkan; Mohammad J Taherzadeh; Mats Galbe; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Techno-economic analysis; Organosolv; bioethanol; filamentous fungi; food; lignin; fruit; bioactive compounds; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : Sustainable development of society and industry is necessary for a safer future that is being challenged by environmental pollution, climate change, and scarcity of food and nutrition. Materials considered as waste can be converted into value-added products and energy, hence regained to the economy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Colonisation and PAH degradation by wood-rotting fungi in contaminated soil

    Author : Erik Andersson; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; agricultural hydrology; Soil Science; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; PLFA; PAH metabolites; PAH; degradation; contaminated soil; soil; brown-rot fungi; white-rot fungi; Colonisation; fungal growth; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära; Chemical technology and engineering; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi;

    Abstract : Bioremediation of soils is considered a low-cost alternative to other remediation techniques. Its ability to remove a number of different pollutants has been demonstrated, relying mainly on the activities of indigenous soil bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 5. Microbial strategies for deconstruction of bark components

    Author : Amanda Sörensen Ristinmaa; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; extractives; fungi; microbial communities; polysaccharides; Bark; proteomics; enzymes; bacteria; yeast;

    Abstract : Bark is the outermost part of a tree, and it is a protective layer against external threats such as microorganisms and environmental stressors. Bark consists of various polymers including lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and it also contains a large fraction of compounds known as extractives. READ MORE
