  1. 1. Experimental and theoretical studies of nitride fuels

    Author : Merja Pukari; Janne Wallenius; Toru Ogawa; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fast reactor fuel; ab-initio modelling; fuel fabrication; inert matrix nitride fuel;

    Abstract : With respect to nitrides being considered as potential fast reactor fuels, research is conducted on the out-of-pile thermophysical properties, sintering and fabrication processes, gas migration mechanisms, self-diffusion and point defect behaviour of actinide nitrides, their surrogate materials, and the inert matrix material ZrN . The experimental research, carried out in the framework of qualifying fuel for the European Lead Cooled Training Reactor (ELECTRA), shows that sintered ZrN and (Dy,Zr)N pellet densities are influenced by the oxygen concentration in the material. 2. 2. Production and Characterization of ZrN and PuN Materials for Nuclear Fuel Applications

    Author : Marcus Hedberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Internal gelation; Carbothermal reduction; Zirconium Nitride; Plutonium Nitride; Nuclear fuel;

    Abstract : At the heart of a nuclear reactor resides its fuel. The chemical composition of the nuclear fuel affects the performance of several key properties important for the overall operation and safety performance of the reactor. READ MORE

  3. 3. Nitride fuel production by the internal sol gel process

    Author : Marcus Hedberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitride fuels; ZrN; internal sol gel;

    Abstract : AbstractDuring operation of a fourth generation reactor system it is necessarily not desirable to utilize an oxide fuel matrix as in light water reactor systems. One type of chemical compounds that has been suggested is nitride based nuclear fuel. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neutronic and burnup studies of accelerator-driven systems dedicated to nuclear waste transmutation

    Author : Kamil Tucek; Jan Wallenius; Massimo Salvatores; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Partitioning and transmutation of plutonium, americium, and curium is inevitable if the radiotoxic inventory of spent nuclear fuel is to be reduced by more than a factor of 100. But, admixing minor actinides into the fuel severely degrades system safety parameters, particularly coolant void reactivity, Doppler effect, and (effective) delayed neutron fractions. READ MORE
