  1. 1. Respiratory tract infections, reflex apnea and sudden infant death : experimental and epidemiological studies with special reference to respiratory syncytial virus, Bordetella pertussis and sleep position

    Author : Carl Lindgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bordetella pertussis; Infection; Interleukins; Laryngeal chemoreflex; Respiratory syncytial virus; Reflex apnea; Sleep; Sleeping position; Sudden infant death;

    Abstract : The seasonal distribution of Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) followed the prevalence of respiratory tract infections (RTI) when prone sleeping position was recommended, but this covariation has recently been attenuated. Airway infections in the young infant are known to produce respiratory disturbances. READ MORE

  2. 2. Apnea, small for date and autonomic imbalance : risk factors in relation to SIDS

    Author : Ann Edner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS ; Apparent Life Threatening Event ALTE ; Small for Gestational Age SGA ; Tilt test; Heart Rate Variability HR V ;

    Abstract : SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is defined as an infant who has died suddenly and its cause "remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history". An infant who during sleep has been found apneic, pale or cyanotic and limp, and has required either vigorous stimulation or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is defined to have been affected of an Apparent Life Threatening Event (ALTE). 3. 3. The human diving response : effects of temperature and training

    Author : Erika Schagatay; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Djurfysiologi; pig; human; training; breath-holding time; breaking point; cold-receptors; arterial blood; vasoconstriction; bradycardia; diving reflex; diving response; Breath-hold diving; Animal physiology; simulated diving; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Sports; Idrott; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim was to elucidate the cardiovascular response associated with breath-hold diving, especially the effects of temperature in its elicitation and the effects of different types of training on the human diving response (DR) and breath-holding time (BHT), and to evaluate the human DR in a mammalian perspective. A model for simulated diving by apnea and facial immersion in cold water was developed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lung volumes and lung mechanics in anesthetized children

    Author : Adalbjörn Thorsteinsson; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sulfur hexafluoride; Anaesthesiology; lung volumes; lung compliance; Anesthesia: pediatric; functional residual capacity; intensive care; Anestesiologi; ventilation inhomogeneity; intensivvård; airway closure;

    Abstract : The thesis was intended to fill gaps in the knowledge regarding the normal development of lung volumes and lung mechanics in children, from young infancy to the mid-teens. In particular, data were previously lacking regarding pre-school children. The studies were done during anesthesia and muscle relaxation. READ MORE
