  1. 6. Genetic genealogy and epidemiology of Francisella

    Author : Kerstin Svensson; Anders Johansson; Mats Forsman; Sam R. Telford III; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella tularensis; tularemia; genotyping; epidemiology; GIS; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases; infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : This thesis is about analyzing genetic differences among isolates of Francisella tularensis – the tularemia-causing bacterium. To elucidate how these bacterial isolates are related, and their geographical and genetic origins, I have developed typing assays for Francisella and used them to study the epidemiology of tularemia. 2. 7. Modulating Organ Dysfunction in Experimental Septic Shock : Effects of Aminoglycosides, Antiendotoxin Measures and Endotoxin Tolerance

    Author : Markus Castegren; Jan Sjölin; Claes Frostell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lipopolysaccharide; animal model; pig; tobramycin; endotoxin elimination; immunoparalysis; secondary sepsis; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Sepsis is a common diagnose in the intensive care population, burdened with a high mortality. The systemic inflammatory reaction underlying the development of septic organ dysfunction can be modeled using Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide, endotoxin. READ MORE

  3. 8. Pilicides and Curlicides : Design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel antibacterial agents targeting bacterial virulence

    Abstract : New strategies are needed to counter the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. One such strategy is to design compounds that target bacterial virulence, which could work separately or in concert with conventional bacteriostatic or bactericidal antibiotics. READ MORE

  4. 9. In vitro Pharmacodynamics of Antifungal Agents in the Treatment of Candida Infections

    Author : Anders Lignell; Jan Sjölin; Elisabeth Löwdin; Mats Kalin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; amphotericin B; antagonism; Candida; human serum; inhibition; interaction; in vitro; kinetic model; pharmacodynamics; pharmacokinetics; posaconazole; protein binding; voriconazole; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Pharmacodynamic studies are important for the optimal use of antimicrobial agents. Combination antifungal therapy may be one method to improve outcome in invasive Candida infections. READ MORE

  5. 10. Arsenic Influences Virus Replication in Experimental Coxsackievirus B3 Infection

    Author : Ylva Molin; Nils-Gunnar Ilbäck; Eva Hjelm; Göran Friman; Jonas Blomberg; Gunnar Nordberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; coxsackievirus B3; trace elements; arsenic; selenium; virology; IFN-γ; NFκB; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Trace elements are essential for the host defence against infections, and during common infections, the balance of trace elements is changed in serum and tissues. Supplementation with selenium (Se), an essential trace element, is known to decrease the severity of coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) infection in mice. READ MORE
