  1. 11. Characterization of Pleiotropic Activities of alpha1-Antitrypsin

    University dissertation from Lund University

    Author : Caroline Sandström; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2008]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; alpha1-Antitrypsin deficiency; alpha1-Antitrypsin;

    Abstract : Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a respiratory disease characterized by chronic inflammatory response in the airways and lung parenchyma that involves the influx of inflammatory, structural cells and mediators. The inflammatory process resulting in lung tissue destruction, emphysema, includes the excess of uninhibited proteases released from inflammatory cells. READ MORE

  2. 12. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in rheumatoid arthritis aspects of pathogenesis and risk

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå universitet

    Author : Bengt Wahlin; Umeå universitet.; [2019]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rheumatoid arthritis; inflammation; atherosclerosis; cardiovascular disease; risk estimation; cytomegalovirus; T-cells; bone turnover; osteoprotegerin; osteocalcin; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an increased prevalence and severity of atherosclerosis, and a corresponding increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms causing this are not well elucidated, but both traditional cardiovascular risk factors and RA-associated factors have been associated with atherosclerosis and increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with RA. 3. 13. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Elisabet Rytter; Uppsala universitet.; Uppsala universitet.; [2011]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Abstract : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings. 4. 14. Obesity-associated inflammation in adipose tissue

    University dissertation from Umeå : Umeå University

    Author : Malin Alvehus; Umeå universitet.; [2012]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose tissue; inflammation; pro-inflammatory cytokines; serum; obesity; weight loss; menopause;

    Abstract : Background: Excess body fat, particularly in the visceral depot, is linked to increased mortality and morbidity, including the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue may be a key mediator of obesity-associated diseases. READ MORE

  5. 15. Prostaglandins and Isoprostanes in Relation to Risk Factors for Atherosclerosis Role of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Johanna Helmersson; Uppsala universitet.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; prostaglandin F2α; F2-isoprostane; interleukin-6; C-reactive protein; serum amyloid A; tocopherols; cardiovascular risk factors; variation; inflammation; oxidative stress; human; Folkhälsomedicin; MEDICINE Social medicine Public health medicine research areas; MEDICIN Socialmedicin Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden;

    Abstract : Inflammation and oxidative stress may be involved in atherogenesis. This thesis describes clinical studies of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), an inflammatory mediator, and the isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α, a reliable indicator of oxidative stress, and cytokine-related inflammatory mediators and indicators in healthy subjects and in a population-based cohort of Swedish men.
