  1. 1. A time and place for everything? : social visualisation tools and critical literacies

    Author : Veronica Johansson; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Critical literacy; Document perspective; enactments of meaning; geographic information systems GIS ; ICT; information activities; inscriptions; interaction; library and information science LIS ; representation; social data; social visualisation tools; sociocultural perspective; Library and information science; Library and Information Science; Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap;

    Abstract : The aim of this study is to analyse mutual enactments of critical literacies and social visualisation tools as information resources. The central concept of critical literacies as used here extends and redefines prior critical literacy definitions to denote the pluralistic situated enactments of meaning through which study participants identify, question and transform bias, restrictions and power related aspects of access, control and use in relation to the tools. Abstract : Flood maps showing extents of predicted flooding for a given extreme event have wide usage in all types of spatial planning tasks, as well as serving as information material for the public. However, the production processes that these maps undergo (including the different data, methods, models and decisions from the persons generating them), which include both Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and hydraulic modelling, affect the map’s content, and will be reflected in the final map. 4. 4. Graphic Representation and Visualisation as Modelling Support for the Knowledge Acquisition Process

    Author : Anne Håkansson; Andreas Hamfelt; Harald Kjellin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Datavetenskap; Artficial Intelligence; Knowledge-Based Systems; Knowledge Acquisition; Graphic Representation; Visualisation; Unified Modelling Language; Modelling Rule-based Systems; Visual programming; Declarative Programming; Information Networks; User-Centered Design; Knowledge Interface; Datavetenskap; Computer science; Datavetenskap; datalogi; Computer Science;

    Abstract : The thesis describes steps taken towards using graphic representation and visual modelling support for the knowledge acquisition process in knowledge-based systems – a process commonly regarded as difficult. The performance of the systems depends on the quality of the embedded knowledge, which makes the knowledge acquisition phase particularly significant. READ MORE

  5. 5. Learning based Word Search and Visualisation for Historical Manuscript Images

    Author : Tomas Wilkinson; Anders Brun; Josep Lladós; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Word Spotting; Convolutional Neural Networks; Deep Learning; Region Proposals; Historical Manuscripts; Computer Vision; Image Analysis; Visualisation; Document Analysis; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Today, work with historical manuscripts is nearly exclusively done manually, by researchers in the humanities as well as laypeople mapping out their personal genealogy. This is a highly time consuming endeavour as it is not uncommon to spend months with the same volume of a few hundred pages. READ MORE
