  1. 1. Urban poverty, social exclusion and social housing finance. The case of PRODEL in Nicaragua

    Author : Alfredo Stein; Boende och bostadsutveckling; []
    Keywords : Urban poverty; Microfinance; Social exclusion; Social housing finance; Central America; Asset accumulation; Infrastructure; Financial inclusion; Nicaragua; International donors;

    Abstract : The purpose of the thesis is to further understand key conceptual and operational challenges that international aid donors, and public and private institutions, face while designing and implementing alternative forms of social housing finance which aim to be inclusive for the urban poor. Based on an in-depth study of the work of the Foundation for the Promotion of Local Development (PRODEL) in three cities in Nicaragua during a period of 15 years, the thesis tries to answer three research questions: What are the constraints the urban poor face in financing the incremental way they build their individual housing and collective assets? Why does housing microfinance not always enhance inclusion of the urban poor? How does the tension between the goal of achieving financial sustainability and increasing financial inclusion affect the policy of international donors and governments, and the practice of local financial institutions? To answer these questions, the thesis adopts a realist approach as well as a critical case study method as used in disciplines such as political science and history to explain the trends and complexities of the phenomena investigated, and formulates an argument in the form of a proposition: if financial exclusion occurs in PRODEL it might also occur elsewhere. 2. 2. Designing the Design Organisation: Client-consultant coordination in a large infrastructure project

    Author : Therese Eriksson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; organisational heuristics; infrastructure; project routines; practice approach; megaprojects; public projects; organisational routines; coordination;

    Abstract : Large infrastructure projects are unique and last for a long time, but they are still temporary organisations. The technology involved is often complex, and the uncertainty is high. Managing such projects and coordinating all the actors involved is a complicated task for both suppliers and clients. READ MORE

  3. 3. Underneath Norrköping : An Urban Mine of Hibernating Infrastructure

    Author : Björn Wallsten; Joakim Krook; Vanesa Castán Broto; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Urban mining; infrastructure; hibernating stocks; Material Flow Analysis; infrastructure studies; Norrköping;

    Abstract : This study examines the subsurface infrastructure in the Swedish city of Norrköping from an urban mining perspective. Urban mining is a broadly defined term for different strategies that regard the built environment as a resource base for materials. READ MORE

  4. 4. A Microdata Analysis Approach to Transport Infrastructure Maintenance

    Author : Kristin Svenson; Lars Rönnegård; Karin Edvardsson; Nasir Gharaibeh; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Transport Infrastructure Asset Management; Transport Infrastructure Maintenance; Statistical Modeling; Microdata Analysis; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis; Komplexa system - mikrodataanalys;

    Abstract : Maintenance of transport infrastructure assets is widely advocated as the key in minimizing current and future costs of the transportation network. While effective maintenance decisions are often a result of engineering skills and practical knowledge, efficient decisions must also account for the net result over an asset's life-cycle. READ MORE

  5. 5. Interaction Infrastructure : a Holistic Approach to Support Co-Modality for Freight

    Author : Inger Gustafsson; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Logistics; Co-modality; Transport policy; Information;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have illustrated how information is essential for the management of transport chains. I have explored the notion of transparency as well as its importance for transport chains. The conclusion drawn is that transparency does not mean that every player should know everything at all times. READ MORE
