  1. 1. Eating difficulties in elderly, focusing on patients with stroke

    University dissertation from Department of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University

    Author : Albert Westergren; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2001]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; discharge; length of in-hospital stay; malnutrition; energy; alertness; ingestion; deglutition; dysphagia; eating; elderly care; rehabilitation; Nursing care; stroke; Gerontology; Gerontologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to describe eating difficulties and interventions to improve eating among elderly patients, especially those with stroke, to make comparisons between patients with dysphagia and those without (Papers I & II), those with and without assisted eating (Paper IV), and to analyse the relation between eating difficulties, nutritional status (Papers II-V), pressure ulcers (Paper IV), length of hospital stay and levels of independent living when discharged (Paper V). Eating difficulties were mainly assessed using structured observations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Conceptual Design of Propulsion Systems for Boundary Layer Ingestion

    University dissertation from ; Chalmers tekniska högskola; Gothenburg

    Author : Sebastian Samuelsson; [2019]
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; turbo-electric aircraft; performance modeling; Aviation; boundary layer ingestion; aircraft engine; conceptual design; propulsion integration;

    Abstract : To reduce the climate impact of aviation new aircraft and engine concepts as well as improved design methods are needed. In this thesis, two fronts are explored. The first concerns improved methods for the conceptual design of the engine. READ MORE

  3. 3. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton

    University dissertation from Carina Pålsson, Limnology, Ecology Building, S-223 62, Lund, Sweden

    Author : Carina Pålsson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; limnology; mixotrophy; phagotrophy; phytoplankton; oligotrophic; clear-water lakes; grazing; competition; nutrient enrichment; autotrophy; heterotrophy; bacterial ingestion; Hydrobiology; Marinbiologi; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. READ MORE

  4. 4. Non-indigenous zooplankton the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Systemekologiska institutionen

    Author : Marc Andersen Borg; Stockholms universitet.; [2009]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acartia tonsa; Bythotrephes longimanus; Cercopagis pengoi; egg production; fitness; food web changes; ingestion rates; invasive species; metabolic balance; mortality; non-indigenous zooplankton; predation impact; salinity tolerance; stable isotopes; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology Marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi Marin ekologi; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 5. 5. DNA lesions and carcinogenicity from the urban air pollutants 2- and 3-nitrobenzanthrone

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Biosciences and Nutrition

    Author : Eszter Nagy; Karolinska Institutet.; Karolinska Institutet.; [2006]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 3-nitrobenzanthrone; 2-nitrobenzanthrone; diesel exhaust; carcinogenicity; acute toxicity; DNA adducts; oxidative stress; intratracheal; ingestion;

    Abstract : In the early 1990's, Japanese doctors in urban areas discovered an increasing incidence of lung cancer among women, which was not attributed to a change in diet or smoking. This led to a growing investigation of urban air, and subsequently the discovery of 3-nitrobenzanthrone (3-NBA), a pollutant originating from diesel emissions. READ MORE
