  1. 1. Acupuncture in Obstetrics and Anaesthesia

    Author : Nina Kvorning; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anestesiologi; intensivvård; auditory evoked potentials; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; sevoflurane; surgery; minimal alveolar concentration; inhalation; electric stimulation; obstetrics; delivery; childbirth; tender points; maternaty care; anesthesia; analgesia; labor; pregnancy; acupuncture; pain;

    Abstract : The aims of the present thesis (I-V) were to evaluate the analgesic and adverse effects of manual acupuncture for low-back and pelvic pain during pregnancy (I) and for labour pain (II-III), and also to study the effects of low-frequency electro acupuncture (EA) on clinical physiological responses to skin incision in anaesthetized patients (IV-V). Acupuncture in obstetric patients (I-III) Manual acupuncture in obstetric patients was found to relieve pain in one prospective randomised (I) and two retrospective (II-III) studies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modulation of Inflammatory Response in Surgical Trauma

    Author : Andreas Kvarnström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammatory response; cytokines; complement activation; colorectal surgery; laparoscopy; inhalation anesthesia; intravenous anesthesia; autologous blood transfusion;

    Abstract : Surgical trauma results in the activation of inflammatory cascade systems in the body. Excessive systemic inflammation can lead to organ dysfunction in one or several organs. READ MORE

  3. 3. The effects of posture, airway pressure and anesthesia on regulation of the regional ventilation and perfusion distribution in healthy humans

    Author : Sven Nyrén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Anesthesia; ALI; ARDS; CPAP; Dual isotope; Mechanical ventilation; Nitric oxide; Nuclear medicine; Prone position; Regional ventilation; Regional perfusion; SPECT;

    Abstract : Gas exchange has been observed to vary with posture in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. In this thesis, the effect of posture on theregional distribution of ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q) in the lungs under normal breathing with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and during general anesthesia with mechanical ventilation was studied. 4. 4. Evaluation of efficacy and safety of pulsed inhaled nitric oxide in the anesthetized horse : preparing for clinical use

    Author : Tamara Grubb; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Anesthetized, recumbent horses commonly develop hypoxemia secondary to ventilation/perfusion (VA/Q) mismatch and shunting of pulmonary blood (Qs/Qt) through atelectatic lung regions. Hypoxemia in the anesthetized horse is difficult to treat and ventilatory therapy is often ineffective. READ MORE

  5. 5. Focal ischemic reperfusion stroke model in rats and the role of galanin

    Author : Lovisa Holm; Annette Theodorsson; Elvar Theodorsson; Tomas Hökfelt; Yanlin Wang-Fischer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Stroke is the third most common cause for mortality in industrialised countries and amongst the major causes of long- time morbidity. While the mortality due to myocardial infarction has been dramatically reduced during the last 10-15 years, mortality due to stroke remains almost the same, despite the fact that the two share similar basic pathogenic mechanisms including atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes.
