  1. 1. Early assessment of efficacy and safety of novel anticoagulants as exemplified by direct thrombin inhibitors. Non-clinical pharmacodynamic studies in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Margareta Elg; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; animals; antidote; bleeding; inhibition constant; inogatran; association rate constant; melagatran; thrombin inhibitor; thrombosis; fibrinolysis;

    Abstract : The drawbacks of today's anticoagulants are parenteral use (heparins), a narrow interval between efficacy and bleeding, and the high variability of effect with a consequent need for frequent monitoring (coumarins). The aim of the current studies was to evaluate properties important for efficacy and safety of novel anticoagulants, as exemplified by direct thrombin inhibitors, with non-clinical methods. 2. 2. The kinetics of cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis : Implications of the synergism between enzymes

    Author : Priit Väljamäe; Jan-Christer Janson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Acetobacter; Cellobiohydrolase; Cellobiose; Cellulase; Cellulose; Diffusion; Endoglucanase; Hydrolysis; Inhibition; Kinetics; Model; Product; Substrate; Surface; Synergism; Trichoderma reesei; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The hydrolysis kinetics of bacterial cellulose and its derivatives by Trichoderma reesei cellulases was studied. The cellulose surface erosion model was introduced to explain the gradual and strong retardation of the rate of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. READ MORE

  3. 3. Radiation induced dissolution of model compounds for spent nuclear fuel : mechanistic understanding of oxidative dissolution and its inhibition

    Author : Sara Nilsson; Mats Jonsson; Lara Duro; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis is focused on radiation induced oxidative dissolution of UO2, Pd-doped UO2, SIMFUEL (as model substances for spent nuclear fuel) and UN (a possible future fuel) and inhibition of the oxidative dissolution. H2O2 is assumed to be the most important oxidant for spent nuclear fuel dissolution under deep repository conditions. READ MORE

  4. 4. The role of striatal inhibition in the processing of cortical neuronal avalanches

    Author : Andreas Klaus; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The brain is spontaneously active even in the absence of any obvious motor actions or sensory perceptions. This so-called resting or ongoing activity reflects neuronal interactions necessary for the brain to process past actions, allow for current inputs, and prepare for future decisions and responses. 5. 5. Inhibition of the plasma contact system on endpoint immobilized heparin and human endothelium

    Author : Javier Augusto Sánchez Saavedra; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Contact activation system; FXII; prokallikrein; antithrombin; specific AT-binding site; immobilized heparin; heparan sulphate; endothelium;

    Abstract : When blood is exposed to foreign materials or injured tissue, several defense systems are activated. The contact with an artificial surface leads to activation of FXII, the first proenzyme of the plasma contact activation system, with concomitant triggering of the intrinsic coagulation and also the fibrinolytic-, kallikrein- and complement systems.
