  1. 21. Functional Imaging of Spinal Locomotor Networks

    Author : Chetan Nagaraja; Klas Kullander; Gilad Silberberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Central pattern generators; two-photon microscopy; locomotor rhythm; multiple rhythmicities; inhibitory neurotransmission; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Movement is necessary for the survival of most animals. The spinal cord contains neuronal networks that are capable of motor coordination and of producing different movements. In particular, a very reduced neuronal network in the spinal cord can produce simple rhythmic outputs even in the absence of descending or sensory inputs. READ MORE

  2. 22. Alpha1-Antitrypsin: New insights into the biological role in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Izabela Nita; Enheten för kroniska inflammatoriska och degenerativa sjukdomar; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT), an acute-phase glycoprotein produced predominantly in the liver by hepatocytes, but also by macrophages, pulmonary alveolar cells and intestinal epithelial cells, is a member of the SERPIN superfamily (SERine Protease INhibitors), and is one of the major inhibitors of neutrophil elastase in human plasma. Although AAT plays a critical role in regulating inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil serine proteases, recent studies suggest that AAT exhibits much broader anti-inflammatory activity. READ MORE

  3. 23. Computational prediction of receptor-ligand binding affinity in drug discovery

    Author : John Marelius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; computer-aided ligand design; molecular dynamics simulation; linear interaction energy; free energy perturbation; scoring function; dihydrofolate reductase; thrombin; serine proteases; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biotechnology; molekylär bioteknik avd f jonfysik ;

    Abstract : The evaluation of inhibition constants or, more generally, receptor-ligand binding affinities is a crucial part of the drug discovery process. Chemical synthesis and affinity screening is only affordable for a limited number of compounds. This makes computational methods to predict binding affinities of candidate ligands highly desirable. 4. 24. Fat metabolism : A clinical and experimental study with special reference to newborns

    Author : Gertrud Angsten; Karl-Anders Dahlström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; neonates; total parenteral nutrition; plasma and muscle carnitine; carnitine reference intervals; medium-chain triglycerides; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; kirurgi; särskilt barnkirurgi; Pediatric Surgery;

    Abstract : Lipid emulsion is an important constituent of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In the investigations described in this thesis the effects of different lipid emulsions in neonates were studied. READ MORE

  5. 25. Tunnels and Grooves : Structure-Function Studies in Two Disparate Enzymes

    Author : Daniel Ericsson; Sherry Mowbray; Guy Dodson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mycobacterium tuberculosis; ribonucleotide reductase; peptide inhibitors; fluorescence polarization; lipase; interfacial activation; hydrolase; X-ray structure; substrate specificity; Structural biology; Strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes structural and binding studies in enzymes from two different  organisms: ribonucleotide reductase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (RNR) and lipase A from Candida antarctica (CalA).RNR is viable as a target for new drugs against the causative agent of tuberculosis.
