  1. 1. A strategy to identify novel antimicrobial compounds : a bioinformatics and HTS approach

    Author : Sara Garbom; Hans Wolf-Watz; Dan Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; Yersinia; T3SS; virulence associated genes; VagH; HemK PrmC; Release factors; small molecular inhibitors; HTS; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Bacterial infections are again becoming difficult to treat because the microbes are growing increasingly resistant to the antibiotics in use today. The need for novel antimicrobial compounds is urgent and to achieve this new targets are crucial. In this thesis we present a strategy for identification of such targets via a bioinformatics approach. READ MORE

  2. 2. DNA Analysis of PCR-Inhibitory Forensic Samples

    Author : Johannes Hedman; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; amylase; statistical modelling; principal components analysis; PCR inhibitors; PCR inhibition; forensic DNA analysis; DNA polymerase blend; DNA polymerase; crime scene samples;

    Abstract : DNA evidence, linking perpetrators to crime scenes, is central to many legal proceedings. However, crime scene samples often contain extraneous substances that may interfere with the PCR-based forensic analysis, resulting in partial or negative DNA profiles. Extensive DNA purification may remove inhibitors, but involves the risk of DNA loss. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ethanol from Lignocellulose - Fermentation Inhibitors, Detoxification and Genetic Engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for Increased Resistance

    Author : Simona Larsson; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; detoxification; S. cerevisiae; lignocellulose; inhibition; phenolic compounds; laccase; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Ethanol can be produced from lignocellulose by first hydrolysing the material to sugars, and then fermenting the hydrolysate with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Hydrolysis using dilute sulphuric acid has advantages over other methods, however, compounds which inhibit fermentation are generated during this kind of hydrolysis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Proteasome Inhibitors against Cancer: Determining Biology and Finding Novel Compounds

    Author : Arjan Mofers; Stig Linder; Padraig D´arcy; Sonia Lain; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cancer continues to be a tremendous burden on society in terms of loss of quality of life and life-years. The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), responsible for the bulk of protein turnover in the cell, is considered an attractive target in cancer therapy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fungi-Based Biorefinery : Valorization of industrial residuals and techno-economic evaluation

    Author : Gülru Bulkan; Mohammad J Taherzadeh; Mats Galbe; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Techno-economic analysis; Organosolv; bioethanol; filamentous fungi; food; lignin; fruit; bioactive compounds; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning;

    Abstract : Sustainable development of society and industry is necessary for a safer future that is being challenged by environmental pollution, climate change, and scarcity of food and nutrition. Materials considered as waste can be converted into value-added products and energy, hence regained to the economy. READ MORE
