  1. 1. Splanchnic perfusion in cardiac surgery

    Author : Anders Thorén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Splanchnic circulation; jejunal mucosal perfusion; laser Doppler flowmetry; cardiopulmonary bypass; cardiac surgery; inotropic agents; gastric tonometry; sympathetic reflex;

    Abstract : Splanchnic ischemia in cardiac surgery is considered a risk factor in the development of the Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), which is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care unit. Splanchnic ischemia/reperfusion may lead to an injury of the intestinal mucosa and induce a systemic inflammation (SIRS), which is proposed to precede MODS. READ MORE

  2. 2. Levosimendan in early experimental sepsis: effects on the heart and hepatosplanchnic circulation

    Author : Doris Cunha Goncalves; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; septic shock; myocardial oxygen consumption; myocardial dysfunction; levosimendan; endotoxin; contractility; catecholamines; calcium sensitizer; cardiotonic agents; splanchnic perfusion;

    Abstract : Sepsis-related cardiovascular dysfunction associated with fluid-unresponsive tissue hypoperfusion might require inotropic treatment. This cardiovascular dysfunction seems to involve calcium desensitization and adrenergic unresponsiveness. READ MORE

  3. 3. Strain echocardiography in cardiac surgery - studies on the effects of loading conditions and inotropic agents on myocardial contraction and relaxation

    Author : Martin Fredholm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; strain echocardiography; right heart catheterization; cardiac surgery; heart failure; levosimendan; milrinone; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; systole; diastole; preload; afterload; pacing; longitudinal function; ventricular dimensions; ventricular interdependence;

    Abstract : Background: Although reductions in myocardial contractility and relaxation are key compo-nents in heart failure (HF), assessment of them is difficult, as clinical measurements deal with a net effect of myocardial contractility, heart filling (preload), outflow impedance (afterload) and heart rate (HR). Echocardiographic (echo) deformation parameters, like strain (myocardial shortening) and strain rate (the speed of deformation, SR), have been proposed to more accu-rately measure myocardial function, but incongruent previous studies have raised concerns that they may be load-dependent. 4. 4. Drug use in the elderly : are quantity and quality compatible

    Author : Inga Klarin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Population-based; cross-sectional; longitudinal; aged; aged 80 and over; drug utilization; cardiovascular agents; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors; inappropriate drug use; heart failure; dementia; hospitalization; mortality; Sweden.;

    Abstract : The increasing number of elderly, and the increasing drug use among the elderly, emphasizes the need to continuously monitor drug utilization in this group. The scarcity of randomized controlled trials including elderly people give population-based, observational studies an important role as source of information on drug use and drug-related problems.
