  1. 16. Strategic nitrogen management in stockless organic cropping systems : redistribution of residual biomass for improved energy and nitrogen balance

    Author : Tora Råberg; RISE; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; bioenergy; biomass management; crop rotation; ecological intensification; green manure; life cycle assessment; nitrogen cycling; organic agriculture; soil incubation; stockless cropping systems;

    Abstract : A griculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. 2. 17. Intensification of the biogas process by improved process monitoring and biomass retention

    Author : Lovisa Björnsson; Miljö- och energisystem; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; BOD; hydrogen; on-line; monitoring; biofilm; anaerobic digestion; biogas; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The utilisation of energy in the form of biogas is one of the environmentally sound alternatives available using renewable energy sources. Biogas is formed by anaerobic degradation of organic material, the main consistuent being energy-rich methane. READ MORE

  3. 18. Local and landscape-level impacts of agricultural intensification on arthropod communities and their interaction networks

    Author : Guillermo Aguilera Nuñez; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Arthropods play a central role in agricultural landscapes being responsible for the delivery of many ecosystem services such as pollination, biological pest control, and nutrient cycling. But the current global decline of arthropods is intensified by habitat modification, loss and fragmentation, pesticide use and other intensive management practices. READ MORE

  4. 19. "At Least There is Something!" : Strategic decision-making by female farmers in Western Kenya

    Author : Helen Nyberg; Mats Widgren; Peter Kinlund; Anders Närman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Western Kenya; Luo; Luhya; female farmers; gender system; gender contract; intensification of agriculture; diversification of agriculture; diversification of economic sources; Human geography; Kulturgeografi;

    Abstract : In rural sub-Saharan Africa women are often described as the most important farmers, producing the bulk of subsistence food. In this study it is shown that female farmers in the four visited villages of Western Kenya are much more than farmers. READ MORE

  5. 20. Food security in a changing climate : The role of cropland intensification and land acquisitions across Africa

    Author : Altaaf Mechiche-Alami; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agriculture; land grabbing; sustainability science; Network Analysis; Earth observation; Crop model;

    Abstract : Food security is one of the world’s greatest challenges. The current food system shows an entanglement across the globe which means that local farmers reliant on subsistence agriculture no longer operate in isolation of larger-scale processes within the global economy or the changing biophysical system of the planet.
