  1. 1. Interactive Optimisation in Marine Propeller Design

    Author : Ioli Gypa; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; marine propeller design; support-vector machines; machine learning; NSGA-II; optimisation; interactive genetic algorithms; progressively interactive evolutionary computation;

    Abstract : Marine propeller design is a complex engineering problem that depends on the collaboration of several scientific disciplines. During the design process, the blade designers need to consider contradicting requirements and come up with one optimal propeller design as a solution to the specific problem. READ MORE

  2. 2. Computational discovery of DNA methylation patterns as biomarkers of ageing, cancer, and mental disorders : Algorithms and Tools

    Author : Behrooz Torabi Moghadam; Jan Komorowski; Manfred Grabherr; Jaak Vilo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA methylation; machine learning; biomarker; cancer; ageing; classification;

    Abstract : Epigenetics refers to the mitotically heritable modifications in gene expression without a change in the genetic code. A combination of molecular, chemical and environmental factors constituting the epigenome is involved, together with the genome, in setting up the unique functionality of each cell type. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sounds Unheard of: Evolutionary algorithms as creative tools for the contemporary composer

    Author : Palle Dahlstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; evolutionary algorithms; interactive evolution; music composition; sound synthesis; non-linear dynamics; music composition;

    Abstract : Evolutionary algorithms are studied as tools for generating novel musical material in the form of musical scores and synthesized sounds. The choice of genetic representation defines a space of potential music. This space is explored using evolutionary algorithms, in search of useful musical material. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biomimetic Software Engineering Techniques for Dependability

    Author : Robert Feldt; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; automated testing; genetic programming; dependability; software engineering; biomimetic algorithms; design exploration; software development workbench; software visualization; software testing; evolutionary computation;

    Abstract : The powerful information processing capabilities of computers have made them an indispensable part of our modern societies. As we become more reliant on computers and want them to handle more critical and difficult tasks it becomes important that we can depend on the software that controls them. READ MORE

  5. 5. Runtime Management of Multiprocessor Systems for Fault Tolerance, Energy Efficiency and Load Balancing

    Author : Stavros Tzilis; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fault Tolerance; Algorithms; Runtime Management; Multiprocessors; Performance; Adaptive Systems; Load Balancing; Energy Efficiency;

    Abstract : Efficiency of modern multiprocessor systems is hurt by unpredictable events: aging causes permanent faults that disable components; application spawnings and terminations taking place at arbitrary times, affect energy proportionality, causing energy waste; load imbalances reduce resource utilization, penalizing performance. This thesis demonstrates how runtime management can mitigate the negative effects of unpredictable events, making decisions guided by a combination of static information known in advance and parameters that only become known at runtime.
