6. DNA Interaction Dynamics of Ruthenium(II) Complexes
Abstract : DNA-binding of small synthetic ligands is of great importance in a number of different applications, from medicine to molecular biology. This thesis focuses on interactions between DNA and ruthenium(II) complexes, in particular the dimers [µ-bidppz(L)4Ru2]4+ (L=1,10-phenanthroline (P) or L=2,2-bipyridine (B)). READ MORE

7. Groove-binding Unsymmetrical Cyanine Dyes for DNA Applications
Abstract : This work focuses on interactions between DNA and a group of newly developed unsymmetrical cyanine dyes. The aim of the work was to discover fluorescent dyes that can be used in biophysical studies of natural DNA where minimum perturbation of the DNA-helix is essential, where a slow dissociation rate of the dyes is needed and where the ionic strength is an important parameter. 8. Controlling function by structure-intermolecular interactions and crystal engineering with N-donor ligands
Abstract : In the solid state regime, crystal engineering based on non-covalent synthesis requires an intuition about the intermolecular forces that can dictate the molecular architecture. Hydrogen bonds have become an instrumental tool in the self assembly and supramolecular chemistry. READ MORE

9. Biological and Biophysical Studies on Ruthenium Complexes
Abstract : Small molecules that interact with DNA through intercalation are attractive candidates for treatments against cancer and microbial infections. Octahedral ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes, being substitution-inert, readily synthesized and coordinately saturated, has the potential of being developed in to a new family of drugs. READ MORE

10. Properties and applications of materials based on graphite oxide
Abstract : Graphite oxide (GO) is a hydrophilic, layered material prepared by oxidation of graphite. In the first part of this thesis, we studied materials produced from GO by intercalation and functionalization. The second part of the thesis was focused on supercapacitor applications of high surface area carbons prepared from GO using chemical activation. READ MORE
