1. Studies of Dielectric Relaxation in Solid Polymers and Composites
Abstract : Non-linear characteristics of homogeneous solid polymers and solid polymer-based composites have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. In particular experimental studies of non-linear dielectric response of six homogeneous solid polymeric materials and the influence of the composition on the properties of solid polymer-based composites with high dielectric permittivities have been carried out and a theoretical study of dipole-dipole interaction in solids based on a formulation due to P. 2. Tunnels and Grooves : Structure-Function Studies in Two Disparate Enzymes
Abstract : This thesis describes structural and binding studies in enzymes from two different organisms: ribonucleotide reductase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (RNR) and lipase A from Candida antarctica (CalA).RNR is viable as a target for new drugs against the causative agent of tuberculosis. 3. Interfacial Properties of Film Forming Proteins and their Layer-by-Layer Assembly with Nanoparticles
Abstract : The aim of this thesis work was to investigate the interfacial properties of film forming proteins, stability of the layers created by them, and their interactions with nanoparticles. Mussel adhesive protein (Mefp-1) and hydrophobins (HFBI and HFBII) were the three main proteins used. READ MORE

4. Electrical Characterization of Partial Discharge Resistant Enamel Insulation
Abstract : Adjustable speed drives for rotating machines have become increasingly popular as they provide possibilities of smooth and accurate process control as well as for energy savings. In such systems, due to the fact that the voltage applied at terminals of motor windings is no longer purely sinusoidal but characterized by a high content of harmonics, the appearing electrical and thermal stresses yield premature failures of the winding insulation, mainly because of an increased partial discharge (PD) activity. 5. A Spectroscopic Study of Interfacial Films: Internal Structuring, Stability, and Hydration
Abstract : Monolayers of molecules are capable of completely changing the nature of surfaces and their interactions with the surroundings despite their almost negligible thickness. In the research presented in this doctoral thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS) was combined with the Langmuir trough to investigate various manifestations of monolayers, such as biomimetic membranes, mono methyl branched long chain fatty acids in contact with air, and hydrophobic silane monolayers in contact with water.
