  1. 1. Metabolic effects of interleukin-6

    Author : Ingrid Wernstedt; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : IL-6; cytokine; obesity; energy expenditure; lipolysis; ASP; sympathetic nervous system; exercise; -174 G C IL-6 polymorphism; fat mass; stress response; cerebrospinal fluid;

    Abstract : The levels of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the circulation are positively correlated with indices of obesity and metabolic disturbances. Paradoxically, plasma IL-6 levels increase markedly during prolonged and strenuous exercise, mainly due to increased production and release from working skeletal muscle. READ MORE

  2. 2. Interleukin-6 as a mediator of insulin resistance

    Author : Victoria Rotter Sopasakis; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : A potential role of interleukin (IL)-6 for the metabolic abnormalities seen in obesity and insulinresistance was postulated when it was discovered that circulating IL-6 levels were elevated in obeseand insulin-resistant as well as type 2 diabetic individuals. Later it was shown that the adipose tissuewas a major site of IL-6 production, accounting for 15-35% of the total circulating levels. READ MORE

  3. 3. Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) regulate body fat

    Author : Kristina Wallenius; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; insulin-like growth factor I IGF-I ; interleukin-6 IL-6 ; growth hormone GH ; GH releasing factor GHRF ; GH secretagogue GHS ; receptor; leptin; insulin; glucose; intracerebroventricular ICV ; dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry DXA ; indirect calorimetry.;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the regulation of metabolism and body fat mass. Circulating IGF-I is mainly liver derived, while a large part of circulating IL-6 is produced by adipose tissue. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interleukin-6 Signaling Pathways in Human Vascular Endothelial Cells : Molecular Mechanisms and Associations to Atherosclerosis

    Author : Mulugeta Melkie Zegeye; Liza Ljungberg; Allan Sirsjö; Ashok K Kumawat; Magnus Grenegård; Stefan Rose-John; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HUVECs; Angiogenesis; Laminins; Transmigration; Biomarker; Cytokine; Inflammation; Myocardial infarction;

    Abstract : Interleukin-6 is pleotropic cytokine produced by several types of cells including endothelial cells (ECs). IL-6 acts on target cells via two major signaling mechanisms known as classic signaling and trans-signaling. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Interleukin-6 in the Febrile Response

    Author : Namik Hamzic; Camilla Nilsberth; Anders Blomqvist; Ville Wallenius; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Everyone who has been exposed to influenza or a bacterial infection knows how it feels to be sick. Apart from not being willing to participate in social activities, losing your appetite and experiencing pain, you have also most likely suffered from increased body temperature which defines fever, one of the most prominent signs of an acute ongoing infection.
