  1. 11. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists in heart failure : exploring the gap between guideline-directed medical therapy and real-world practice

    Author : Anna Jonsson Holmdahl; Krister Lindmark; Helena Norberg; Ellinor Bergdahl; Fredrik Valham; Niklas Bergh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart failure; Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists; estimated glomerular filtration rate; hyperkalemia; impaired renal function; worsening renal function; guideline-directed medical therapy; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : Heart failure is the possible end-result of a variety of different diseases, where ischemic heart disease and hypertension are the most common causes in high income countries. In Sweden, heart failure has a prevalence of 2% in the adult population and rises to over 10% among people over 70 years of age. The 5-year all-cause mortality is about 50%. READ MORE

  2. 12. Bridging the gap between clinical trials and clinical practice : sacubitril-valsartan in heart failure as a model

    Author : Helena Norberg; Krister Lindmark; Ellinor Bergdahl; Eva-Lotta Glader; Björn Wettermark; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systematic implementation; healthcare quality improvement; chronic disease management; heart failure; sacubitril-valsartan; real-world population; sex differences; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : When novel treatments prove more effective than standard therapies, a swift and effective implementation is needed to reach cost-effectiveness and to benefit eligible patients. Meanwhile, women and elderly are often under-represented in clinical trials, which creates a knowledge gap on how to optimize treatment in clinical practice. READ MORE

  3. 13. Left ventricular function's relation to load, experimental studies in a porcine model

    Author : Roman A'roch; Michael Haney; Jan Poelaert; Lars-Åke Brodin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heart function; preload; afterload; contractility; myocardial tissue velocity; speckle tracking; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Loading conditions are recognized to influence ventricular function according to the Starling relationship for length/stretch and force.  Many modern echocardiographic parameters which have been announced as describing ventricular function and contractile status, may be confounded by uncontrolled and unmeasured load. 4. 14. Atrial fibrillation : treatment, associated conditions and quantification of symptoms

    Author : Niklas Höglund; Steen Jensen; Milos Kesek; Karl Franklin; Juhani Koistinen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Atrial fibrillation; cardioversion; atorvastatin; high-sensitivity C-reactive protein; symptoms; sleep apnea; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia. There is a need for new pharmacological treatment strategies since the current antiarrhythmic drugs have a modest efficacy and may have severe side effects. Cardioversion (CV) of AF offers an opportunity to study related conditions in sinus rhythm (SR) and during AF. READ MORE

  5. 15. Carotid artery disease : plaque features and vulnerability

    Author : Fisnik Jashari; Michael Henein; Per Wester; Christine Kremer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carotid atherosclerosis; ultrasound; plaque features; echogenicity; calcification; surface plaque irregularities; subclinical atherosclerosis; cerebrovascular symptoms; Cardiology; kardiologi; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Abstract : Background: Atherosclerosis is an important cause of stroke. Ultrasound offers the convenience of real-time and detailed assessment of carotid plaque features as well as arterial wall thickening and composition. READ MORE
