12. Endothelin and angiotensin II receptors in human coronary arteries and bypass grafts - Alterations in cardiovascular disease
Abstract : Angiotensin II (Ang II) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) induce strong vasoconstriction via activation of receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells. In this thesis, the contractile Ang II and endothelin receptors were examined in endothelium-denuded human coronary arteries and in bypass grafts (the left internal mammary artery and the saphenous vein), with focus on receptor alterations in cardiovascular disease. 13. Noninvasive assessment of cerebral circulation before, during and after carotid surgery
Abstract : Non-invasive ultrasound investigations were evaluated in patients with carotid artery stenosis in comparison with radiological disease gradations and perioperative blood pressure measurements. The aim was to assess cerebrovascular hemodynamics before, during and after carotid thrombendarterectomy (CEA) in relation to the clinical outcome of the surgical intervention. READ MORE

15. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. READ MORE
