  1. 1. Avian Influenza Virus : Deciphering receptor interactions and their role in interspecies transmission

    Author : Per Eriksson; Patrik Ellström; Björn Olsen; Josef D. Järhult; Åke Lundkvist; Jonas Waldenström; Hans-Dieter Klenk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; birds; glycobiology; glycovirology; host range; mixing vessel; virus attachment; Medical Virology; Medicinsk virologi;

    Abstract : Influenza A virus (IAV) annually infects approximately 5–15 % of the human population, causing ~500,000 deaths globally. Novel IAVs have emerged and spread pandemically in the human population, but have over time established endemic circulation with reduced pathogenicity causing seasonal influenza. The natural reservoir of IAVs is wild waterfowl. READ MORE

  2. 2. Characterization of Bacterial Biofilms for Wastewater Treatment

    Author : Sofia Andersson; Gunnel Dalhammar; Bo Mattiasson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biofilm; extracellular polymeric substances; exopolysaccharides; interspecies interactions; wastewater treatment; denitrification; phosphorus removal; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Research performed at the Division of Environmental Microbiology has over the last years resulted in the isolation of possible bacterial key-organisms with efficient nutrient removal properties (Comamonas denitrificans, Brachymonas denitrificans, Aeromonas hydrophila). Effective use of these organisms for enhanced nutrient removal in wastewater treatment applications requires the strains to be retained, to proliferate and to maintain biological activity within theprocess. 3. 3. Biochemical Interactions of Some Saproxylic Fungi

    Author : Joel Ljunggren; Bengt Gunnar Jonsson; Erik Hedenström; Dan Bylund; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biologically active compounds; bioactive; fungi-fungi interaction; fungi co-culture; extracellular amino acids.;

    Abstract : Interactions are all around us, and as humans we may use words and gestures to communicate our intentions. At the micro level of fungi, communications are replaced by chemical signals and structure. READ MORE

  4. 4. Too close for comfort : The role of Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) in interbacterial competition and cooperation

    Author : Marcus Wäneskog; Sanna Koskiniemi; Paul Rainey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial interactions; cell-cell binding; contact-dependent growth inhibition; CDI; CdiB; CdiA; CdiI; outer-membrane receptor; BamA; OmpC; OmpF; extracellular toxin delivery; Toxin-Antitoxin; TA-system; persister cells; stress tolerance; stress response; rpoS; rssB; quorum sensing; multicellular behavior; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Contact-Dependent growth inhibition (CDI) was discovered in 2005 in the E. coli isolate EC93. Since then our knowledge of CDI systems and their impact on bacterial communities have increased exponentially. READ MORE
