1. Mechanisms of transendothelial and tissue transport in the peritoneum. Experimental studies on rat
Abstract : In the present thesis, the quantitative role of active transport (transcytosis) in bulk transvascular protein movement in vivo was evaluated. Using chemical transcytosis inhibition (N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and filipin), we were able to show that NEM actually increases endothelial permeability to macromolecules, probably as a result of unspecific toxic action on endothelial cells. 2. Cellular monitoring in open heart surgery. Monitoring of markers for ischemia, free amino acids, glucose and lactate in the myocardial interstitial fluid before, during and after cardiac surgery using microdialysis technique
Abstract : Protection of the myocardium during open-heart surgery is a field of intense development. Numerous protocols have been proposed to minimize ischemia, since the beginning of open-heart surgery more than 40 years ago. READ MORE

3. Hyaluronan and the receptor CD 44 in the heart and vessels : a study in normal and pathological conditions
Abstract : Tissues are not solely composed of cells. The extracellular matrix is important for the cell well-being and cell-cell communication. The glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HYA) is a widely distributed extracellular matrix (ECM) component. READ MORE

4. Myocardial metabolism and ischemia assessed by microdialysis. Clinical and experimental studies in cardiac surgery
Abstract : Background: The available methods to study myocardial metabolism and ischemia show considerable limitations when employed during and after cardiac surgery. Microdialysis is a technique for continuous sampling of substances from the interstitium. READ MORE

5. Transvascular fluid dynamics in the pulmonary vasculature in horses at rest and during exercise
Abstract : Maximal exercise results in a marked increase in cardiac output (Q) with consequent adaptations in pulmonary macro- and microvasculature. These adaptations change pulmonary hemodynamics and increase fluid and solute movement between the pulmonary circulation and the pulmonary interstitium (across the lung). READ MORE
