  1. 16. Neuronal networks involved in low back pain; experimental studies

    Author : Elin Nilsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; low back pain; disc herniation; pyramidal tract; reticulospinal tract; longissimus muscle; nucleus pulposus; VPL; thalamus; rat; cat;

    Abstract : Low back pain is a common cause of disability, with a lifetime prevalence of up to 80%. A lumbar disc herniation, involving a bulging disc and/or leakage of the intervertebral disc’s nucleus pulposus, may be a possible cause of back and sciatic pain. Low back pain has also been associated with dysfunctional control of the paraspinal muscles. READ MORE

  2. 17. On lumbar spine stabilization

    Author : Paul Axelsson; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kirurgi; orthopaedics; traumatology; Surgery; lumbar orthosis.; external pedicular fixation; adjacent segment; intervertebral mobility; Posterolateral lumbar fusion; roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : 71 consecutive posterolateral lumbar fusions without decompression or internal fixation were evaluated with a mean follow-up time of 3.5 (2-7) years. The diagnoses were spondylolysis-olisthesis in 43 cases, degenerative disc disease and/or facet joint arthrosis in 16 cases and pain post laminectomy/ decompression in 12 cases. READ MORE

  3. 18. On lumbar disc herniation : aspects of outcome after surgical treatment

    Author : Peter Elkan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Knowledge about sciatica has grown immensely since the days of Hippocrates. Even so one must be impressed with the anatomical insights of those ancient times. Today we are able to describe at a molecular level how the intervertebral disc degenerates and how a herniation is evolved and its physical consequences for the patient. READ MORE

  4. 19. Surgery versus nonsurgical treatment of cervical radiculopathy. Randomized studies of anterior cervical decompression and fusion followed by physiotherapy versus structured physiotherapy alone

    Author : Markus Engquist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cervical radiculopathy; long term; cervical disc degeneration; outcome; ACDF; surgery; physical therapy; physiotherapy; RCT; randomized;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Cervical radiculopathy (CR) is a symptom complex comprising neck pain and radiating arm pain due to compression of one or more cervical nerve roots, caused by spondylotic narrowing of the intervertebral foramina, intervertebral disc herniation or both. Anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) is a common surgical procedure to treat CR, but the evidence supporting use of this method versus nonsurgical treatment is scarce. READ MORE

  5. 20. The post-operative lumbar spine : a radiological investigation of the lumbar spine after discectomy using MR imaging and CT

    Author : Per Grane; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Lumbar spine; intervertebral discs herniation discitis nerves: radiculitisMR imaging CT contrast media.;

    Abstract : Problems and aims: The clinical outcome of repeat lumbar discectomy is not as satisfactory as that of the primary surgical procedure. One reason is the difficulty of assessing post operative radiological investigations and particularly the significance of the various radiological changes. READ MORE
