  1. 1. The Duodenal Mucosal Bicarbonate Secretion : Role of Melatonin in Neurohumoral Control and Cellular Signaling

    Author : Markus Sjöblom; Gunnar Flemström; Olof Nylander; Karl EO Åkerman; Per M. Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; alkaline secretion; central nervous system; duodenal enterocyte; duodenal ulcer; duodenum; enterochromaffin cell; human; intraarterial; intracellular calcium; intracerebroventricular; melatonin; rat; vagal nerve; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The duodenal lumen is exposed to aggressive factors with a high potential to cause damage to the mucosa. Bicarbonate secretion by the duodenal mucosa is accepted as the primary important defense mechanism against the hydrochloric acid intermittently expelled from the stomach. READ MORE

  2. 2. Experimental porcine models of retinal ischemia

    Author : Håkan Morén; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; retinal ischemia; animal model; multifocal electroretinography; intraarterial coiling; retinal vasculature;

    Abstract : Retinal ischaemia resulting from e.g. diabetes, vein thrombosis or arterial occlusion, is one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness. Although new methods of treatment are being developed, there is still a need for more effective pharmacological forms of treatment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to mental stress with special reference to the regulation of human forearm blood flow

    Author : Madeleine Lindqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : adrenaline; axillary blockade; beta-receptor blockader; calcium channel blockers; cholinergic blockingagents; felodipine; hypertension-primary; noradrenaline; skeletal muscle; sodium nitroprusside; stress-psychologicai; vascular resistance;

    Abstract : The cardiovascular and sympatho-adrenal responses to a standardized mental stress test (Stroop's colour word conflict test CWT) were studied in 63 healthy and 11 hypertensive men by intraarterial pressure measurements, forearm blood flow by occlusion plethysmography and noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (ADR) determinations in arterial and venous plasma. One study included central hemodynamics by right heart catheterization and NA turnover by an isotope dilution method, permitting studies of NA kinetics in the whole body and in a regional vascular bed (the forearm) in hypertensive patients and age-matched controls. 4. 4. On contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography of the aortoiliac arteries

    Author : Johan Wikström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; Magnetic resonance imaging; Magnetic resonance angiography; Contrast media; Arteriosclerosis; Iliac artery; Blood pressures; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi; radiologi; Radiology;

    Abstract : In contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA),vascular signal is produced by the acquisition of a T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scan while the presence of a contrast agent induces a low T1 in blood. In this thesis,CE-MRA of the aortoiliac arteries was evaluated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cardiovascular dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea

    Author : Holger Kraiczi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstructive sleep apnea; blood pressure; cardiac size; left ventricular function; endothelium-dependent vasodilation; forearm vascular conductance; natriuretic peptides;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses relationships between the presence or severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and blood pressure (BP) as well as other signs of cardiovascular dysfunction.In a cross-sectional investigation of a sleep laboratory cohort of 81 patients, a dose response relationship was observed between the number of apneas plus hypopneas per hour of sleep (apnea-hypopnea index, AHI; measured with polysomnography) and office systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP), daytime ambulatory DBP as well as nighttime ambulatory SBP and DBP (all ambulatory measurements taken at 20-minute intervals).
