  1. 1. Safety and efficacy of intracameral mydriatics in cataract surgery

    Author : Björn Lundberg; Anders Behndig; Charlotta Zetterström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Ophtalmology; intracameral; mydriatics; pupil; cataract; phacoemulsification; lidocaine; phenylephrine; cyclopentolate; epinephrine; endothelial cell loss; Oftalmiatrik; oftalmiatrik; Ophtalmology;

    Abstract : Background: In order to perform cataract surgery, adequate dilatation of the pupil is essential. This is traditionally achieved by preoperative topical mydriatic eye-drops, commonly cyclopentolate and phenylephrine. This routine has several disadvantages. First, the slow penetration through the cornea delays the onset of mydriasis. READ MORE

  2. 2. The role of T-type calcium channels in human pancreatic β cell maturity

    Author : Kaixuan Zhao; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This PhD work has optimized a series of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro approaches to recapitulate, intervene and appraise in vivo maturation of naïve β cells within human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived islets (hiPSC-islets). These approaches have also been applied to characterize hyperglycemia-induced dedifferentiation of mature β cells within native human islets grafted into the anterior chamber of the eye (ACE) of immunodeficient mice. 3. 3. Posterior capsule opacification and postoperative endophthalmitis following cataract surgery : predictive and protective factors

    Author : Gisela Wejde; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Posterior capsule opacification; postoperative endophthalmitis; cataract surgery; capsulorhexis; intraocular lens; acrylic hydrophobic IOL; HSM PMMA IOL; silicone IOL; round edge; sharp edge; prophylaxis; cefuroxime;

    Abstract : Modem cataract surgery with implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) is an increasingly safe and successful procedure, though complications still occur. This thesis addresses the most common complication, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and the rare but serious complication postoperative endophthalmitis (POE). READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of aqueous humor dynamics : Studies in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Maria Samuelsson-Almén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; Aqneous humor flow; intraocular pressure; adenylate cyclase; nonpigmented ciliary epithelium; pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; dopamine; prostaglandin; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of PGF2α-l-isopropylester, some neuropeptides, and pharmacological agents on aqueous humor dynamics and intraocular pressure (IOP) in vivo and on adenylate cyclase activity in the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium (NPE) in vitro.Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) caused a dose-dependent increase in cAMP formation, indicating that the NPE contains receptors for PACAP and VIP coupled to adenylate cyclase activation. 5. 5. Safety and  efficacy in the cataract surgery process

    Author : Inger Westborg; Eva Mönestam; Marie Burstedt; Patrik Danielson; Björn Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cataract; prospective cohort study; patient safety; age-related macular degeneration; Ophtalmology; oftalmiatrik;

    Abstract : BackgroundCataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are two major causes for visual impairment in the elderly. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical interventions performed in the western world. As a consequence of the increasing number of operations performed, postoperative visits are a large workload for surgical units. READ MORE
