  1. 21. Ion channels and electrical activity in vascular smooth muscle: Effects of calcium store depletion, cholesterol and cholesterol-lowering drugs

    Author : Andreas Bergdahl; Kärlfysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysiologi; Physiology; statins; endothelin; cholesterol; caveolae; smooth muscle; TRP; Ca2 channels; SOC;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in the vessel wall contract to regulate blood flow and pressure, a function essential for normal circulation through tissues. On the other hand, migration and proliferation of SMCs are important factors in vascular disease, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis following surgical dilatation. READ MORE

  2. 22. Effect of pharmacological treatment of serotonergic function in depression

    Author : Aram El Khoury; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sertonin depression; platelets; HPA-axis; intracellular calcium; lithium; SSRI NRI;

    Abstract : Since its identification in raphe neurons of the central nervous system (CNS), the biogenic amine serotonin (5- hydroxytryptamin, 5-HT) has been implicated in the etiology and pathophysiology of affective disorders, such as depression. It has been proposed that enhancement of central serotonergic transmission may underlie the therapeutic response to different types of antidepressant drugs. READ MORE

  3. 23. Amyloid precursor protein with the Alzheimer´s disease 670/671 mutation : animal and cellular models

    Author : Ewa Kloskowska; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The amyloid precursor protein (APP) and it s derivatives play a key role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer s disease (AD), which is characterized by the presence of multiple aggregates of an APP proteolytic product, Ab, and tau protein in the brains of affected patients. Clinically the disease is manifested by a progressive loss of memory and executive functions. READ MORE

  4. 24. Glutathione in the brain. Studies on efflux and possible implications in neurotoxicity

    Author : Camilla Wallin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glutathione; excitotoxicity; hypoxia-ischemia; brain; rat; anoxia-aglycemia; g-glutamyl transpeptidase; glutamate; NMDA; oxidative stress; mitochondria; amino acids;

    Abstract : Neuronal cell death in acute insults such as stroke, trauma and epilepsy involves overactivation of glutamate receptors, calcium influx and increased formation of potentially toxic reactive oxygen species. Glutathione is a key component in the antioxidant defense system against reactive oxygen species. READ MORE

  5. 25. On the interaction between human neutrophils and Staphylococcus aureus

    Author : Åsa Wilsson; Åsa Ljungh; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Intracellular free calcium is a key second messenger and has been shown to regulate several crucial functions in human neutrophils. The results show that a rise in [Ca2+], is an absolute requirement for efficient killing of serum-opsonized Staphylococcus aureus by human neutrophils. READ MORE
