1. Modeling Amyloid-β Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease Using the Arctic Mutation
Abstract : The Arctic mutation in the Amyloid-β (Aβ) domain of the Amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) causes Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and confers unique biochemical characteristics to Aβ peptides. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate a transgenic model with the Arctic mutation, and to use it to gain new insights into the mechanisms of early (pre-plaque) and late-stage Aβ pathogenesis in AD. 2. Targeting Early Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease in a Transgenic Model
Abstract : The Arctic mutation causes early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and makes amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides more prone to form Aβ protofibrils. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the mechanisms of the Arctic mutation in vivo, and to use transgenic models to determine the role of early intermediates of Aβ aggregation, like protofibrils, in the pathogenesis. 3. Targeting of viral proteins to axons and dendrites
Abstract : In the thesis distribution of different proteins of enveloped and non-enveloped viruses was studied in neurons, which are polarized cells with an axonal and a somatodendritic domain. Such studies may give better insight not only into virus spread within neuronal populations and selective changes in infected neurons as a consequence of the spread, but they may also contribute to an understanding of the basic sorting mechanisms, which are responsible for asymmetric targeting of macromolecules to the pre- and postsynaptic regions in a nerve cell. 4. alpha-synuclein: amyloid fibrils and interactions with lipid membranes
Abstract : The second most common neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson’s disease, is linked with an amyloid forming protein, alpha-synuclein. Hallmarks of Parkinson’s disease are progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons and accumulation of intraneuronal inclusions termed Lewy bodies. READ MORE

5. Beta-amyloid processing and alpha7 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in Alzheimer's disease-related mouse models : interactive mechanisms with focus on new drug targets
Abstract : Accumulation of beta-amyloid (Abeta), neuronal loss and changes in neurotransmitter systems, in particular the cholinergic system, are consistent features of Alzheimer s disease (AD). Abeta is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AD and it has therefore become a target of interest as regards a therapeutic approach. READ MORE
