1. Misfolded superoxide dismutase-1 in sporadic and familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative syndrome of unknown etiology that most commonly affects people in middle and high age. The hallmark of ALS is a progressive and simultaneous loss of upper and lower motor neurons in the central nervous system that leads to a progressive muscle atrophy, paralysis and death usually by respiratory failure. 2. Mini-Jet Production in Proton-Antiproton Interactions and Particle Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions
Abstract : The thesis is based on the data analysis and detector development of the EMU01/CERN, E863/BNL and UA1/CERN experiments. Particle fluctuations are studied with the scaled factorial moments in the fragmentation region of oxygen-induced emulsion interactions from 3.7 to 200 A GeV. READ MORE

3. Topographical study of intranuclear distribution and compartementalization of viral and cellular proteins
Abstract : The nuclei of eukaryotic cells contain a number of specialized domains involved in DNA replication, transcription, pre-mRNA splicing and ribosome assembly. In addition to these structures, nuclear bodies of unknown function have been described. READ MORE

4. Molecular and ultrastructural analysis of Tpr, a nuclear pore complex-attached coiled-coil protein
Abstract : Anchored in the nuclear envelope, nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) are large multiprotein complexes which serve as the gateway for nucleocytoplasmic transport. In vertebrates, a 267kDa protein termed Tpr has been localized to the nucleoplasmic side of the NPCs. The function of Tpr has remained largely elusive. READ MORE

5. Oxygen-dependent regulation of transcription by the hypoxia-inducible factor-1
Abstract : Under limited oxygen availability (hypoxia) cells undergo rapid reprogramming in order to survive in the new environment until normoxic conditions are re-established. The observation that hypoxia can induce the expression of genes involved in erythropoiesis, angiogenesis and glucose metabolism among others, led to the identification of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) as a master regulator of the hypoxia-response pathway.
