11. Central pain after spinal cord injury : experimental studies with special emphasis on pharmacological treatment
Abstract : Injuries and dysfunctions of the central nervous system can cause central pain which, according to clinical experience, is often refractory to conventional treatments. The present thesis consists of experimental studies on the mechanisms and treatments of central pain using a well-established animal model of central pain after spinal cord injury. READ MORE

12. Breathe without pain : Clinical and experimental studies in patients and volunteers with special reference to ventilatory regilation
Abstract : The major aims were, first, to study the advantages and disadvantages of intrathecal analgesia with bupivacaine and morphine with special reference to ventilation and pain relief and, second, to develop a method for studies of the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide and hypoxaemia in volunteers and in patients with varying degrees of ventilation-perfusion ratios.341 elderly patients undergoing major hip surgery perfonned under intrathecal analgesia or general anaesthesia and 31 young and healthy volunteers participated in this work. 13. Role of calcitonin gene-related peptide in nociception : interactions with substance P and opioids
Abstract : This thesis presents a study of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and its antagonist CGRP8-37 and the interactions with substance P and opioids on the transmission of presumed nociceptive information at the spinal cord level in the rat. Significant bilateral increases in hindpaw withdrawal latency (HWL) to heat and mechanical stimulation were induced dose-dependently by intrathecal administration of 5 or 10 but no 1 nmol of CGRP8-37. 14. Perioperative effects of systemic or spinal clonidine as adjuvant during spinal anaesthesia
Abstract : Aim of study: To evaluate the effects of different doses of clonidine administered systemically or spinally in combination with local anaesthetics on sensory and motor block intraoperatively, on pain relief postoperatively, and on the incidence of postoperative alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) in alcohol abusers.Patients and methods: A total 285 patients were included in five studies. 15. Neuropeptides and spinal antinociception : studies on galanin, nociceptin and endomorphin
Abstract : Nociception and/or the sensation of pain is essential for the survival of the organism. Just as important are the antinociceptive mechanisms that reduce the nociceptive input and perceived pain. Without such mechanisms, it would be impossible to turn ones focus away from even the most minor painful stimulus. READ MORE
