  1. 1. iLocks: a novel tool for RNA assays with improved specificity

    Author : Tomasz Krzywkowski; Mats Nilsson; Gunnar von Heijne; Weng-Onn Lui; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA; miRNA; non-coding RNA; padlock probes; rolling circle amplification; invader; single cell; in situ; adenovirus; virology; diagnostics; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The Central Dogma of molecular biology describes a framework for how genetic information is transferred in cells, placing RNA as a messenger between DNA and translated proteins. During the last years, interest in RNA research has grown tremendously due to the increasing understanding and recognition of the importance of RNA in regulation of gene expression, biochemical catalysis, and genome integrity surveillance. 2. 2. Marine seaweed invasions : Impacts and biotic resistance in native ecosystems

    Author : Josefin Sagerman; Sofia Wikström; Fransisco Arenas; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant invasion; exotic species; generalist herbivores; plant-herbivore interactions; enemy-release hypothesis; ecosystem function; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Marine seaweeds constitute one of the most productive plant systems known on Earth and a rich fauna including juvenile fish and crustaceans is dependent on the habitats they form. Human influence on marine costal ecosystems has resulted in large scale changes to the abundance and distribution of species, where species introductions constitute an obvious part. READ MORE

  3. 3. Seaweed Invasions and Novel Chemical Defences

    Author : Swantje Enge; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biological invasions; enemy release; increased competitive ability; novel weapon; chemical defence; plant-herbivore interactions; competition; seaweeds; Bonnemaisonia hamifera;

    Abstract : Biological invasions pose a risk to the biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems in invaded areas. The reasons why some introduced species become dominant and widespread in their new environments is still largely an unsettled question. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biotic resistance in freshwater fish communities

    Author : Anna Henriksson; Göran Englund; David Wardle A.; Jun Yu; Sebastian Diehl; Donald Jackson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biotic resistance; freshwater fish; introductions; invasions; invasion success; invasibility; invasiveness; species richness; saturation; species identity; weighted species richness;

    Abstract : Invasions of non-native species cause problems in ecosystems worldwide, and despite the extensive effort that has been put into research about invasions, we still lack a good understanding for why some, but not other, communities resist these invasions. In this doctoral thesis I test hypotheses on biotic resistance using a large dataset of more than 1000 both failed and successful introductions of freshwater fish into Swedish lakes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structural Studies of O-Polysaccharides from Diarrhoeal Escherichia coli

    Author : Tara Ali; Göran Widmalm; Andrej Weintraub; Lennart Kenne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; Lipopolysaccharide; NMR; biological repeating unit; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry; organisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the structural analysis of O-polysaccharides from the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli that is a diarrhoeal pathogen. The Escherichia coli serotypes investigated were O178, O171, O166 and O128. The methods used in these studies were nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and component analysis. READ MORE
