1. Novel clean-up, concentration and laser desorption/ionization strategies for mass spectrometry
Abstract : Despite valuable advantages of mass spectrometry (MS) techniques they still have drawbacks that need to be overcome, notably their sensitivity to various kinds of interfering substances and associated difficulties involved in detecting signals from analytes present in trace quantities. Thus, high quality analytical data could be acquired by improving sample pre-treatment techniques and/or ionization methods to increase ionization yields and/or avoid the generation of unwanted ions. 2. Determination of binary fission-fragment yields in the reaction 251Cf(nth, f) and Verification of nuclear reaction theory predictions of fission-fragment distributions in the reaction 238U(n, f)
Abstract : Neutron-induced fission has been studied at different excitation energies of the compound nucleus by measurements on the two fissioning systems, 252Cf* and 239U*.For the first time, the light fission fragment yields from the reaction 251Cf(nth, f) have been measured with high resolution. 3. Novel Solid Phase Extraction and Mass Spectrometry Approaches to Multicomponent Analyses in Complex Matrices
Abstract : Analysis of compounds present in complex matrices is always a challenge, which can be partly overcome by applying various sample preparation techniques prior to detection. Ideally, the extraction techniques should be as selective as possible, to minimize the concentration of interfering substances. READ MORE

4. Induction and repair of DNA double-strand breaks in human cells exposed to different radiation qualities
Abstract : Radiation therapy is used in attempting to kill tumor cells by inducing DNA double- strand breaks (DSB), the most critical DNA lesions. Recent and planned radiation therapy strategies use high-linear energy transfer (LET) radiation to effectively treat malignant tumors. READ MORE

5. Time-of-Flight Ion and Electron Spectroscopy: Applications and Challenges at Storage Ring Light Sources
Abstract : This dissertation contains seven studies exploring novel instrumentation for ion and electron spectroscopy, including their applicability at storage ring light sources. The studies focus on instrumentation to study decay, dynamics and dissociation of photoexcited molecules, and the possibility to host such instruments at MAX~IV. READ MORE
