  1. 1. Physiological Studies of Native and Stem Cell-Derived Islets

    Author : Daniel Norman; Per-Ola Carlsson; Daniel Espes; Helge Ræder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Irisin; CART; Islet blood flow; Islets of Langerhans; Stem cell-derived islets; Fysiologi; Physiology; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : In type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the β-cells of the islets of Langerhans are either destroyed by the immune system or stressed due to peripheral insulin resistance. To improve the life of patients with these diseases, new treatments are needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Influence of Islet-derived Factors in Islet Microcirculation and Endocrine Function

    Author : Carl Johan Drott; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Albert Salehi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes mellitus; pancreas; blood flow; islet vascularity; islet-derived; TSP-1; ghrelin; CART; irisin; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a disorder with complex pathology and is frequently associated with vascular complications. In the islet micro milieu locally generated factors may affect both the physiology and the morphology of the tissue. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects of PGC1a-induced exercise adaptations in muscle on plasticity and recovery mechanisms in the CNS

    Author : Lars O Karlsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; muscle; brain; exercise; transgenic; PGC-1α; FNDC5; irisin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, we sought to determine if muscle-derived exercise-induced signaling via PGC-1α muscle activation influences neuroplasticity under physiological or pathophysiological conditions. For this purpose, transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of PGC-1α that display an endurance exercise muscle phenotype were evaluated in models of cranial irradiation and photothrombotic stroke, as well as in aging and in a voluntary running paradigm.
