  1. 1. Crystallization on the Mesoscale : Self-Assembly of Iron Oxide Nanocubes into Mesocrystals

    Author : Michael Agthe; Lennart Bergström; German Salazar-Alvarez; Tommy Nylander; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Self-assembly; iron oxide nanocubes; mesocrystal; small angle X-ray scattering; video microscopy; QCM-D; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Self-assembly of nanoparticles is a promising route to form complex, nanostructured materials with functional properties. Nanoparticle assemblies characterized by a crystallographic alignment of the nanoparticles on the atomic scale, i.e. mesocrystals, are commonly found in nature with outstanding functional and mechanical properties. 2. 2. Following nanoparticle self-assembly in real-time : Small-angle X-ray scattering and quartz crystal microbalance study of self-assembling iron oxide nanocubes

    Author : Martin Kapuscinski; Lennart Bergström; Niklas Hedin; Andrei Petukhov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; self-assembly; mesocrystal; time-resolved; small-angle X-ray scattering; iron oxide nanocubes; QCM-D; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Self-assembly of nanoparticles is a widely used technique to produce nanostructured materials with crystallographic coherence on the atomic scale, i.e. mesocrystals, which can display useful collective properties. This thesis focusses on the underlying mechanism and dynamics of mesocrystal formation by using real-time techniques. READ MORE

  3. 3. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals

    Author : Erik Wetterskog; Lennart Bergström; Markus Niederberger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron oxide; nanoparticle; synthesis; self-assembly; characterization; electron microscopy; scattering; magnetic properties; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 4. 4. Design and characterization of nanoparticles and their assemblies : Transmission electron microscopy investigations from atomic to mesoscopic length scales

    Author : Arnaud Mayence; Lennart Bergström; Liberato Manna; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoparticles; electron microscopy; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful and versatile tool for investigating nanomaterials. In this thesis, various transmission electron microscopy techniques are used to study the chemical and structural features of different types of inorganic nanoparticles of well-defined morphologies as well as their assemblies.
