1. Memory Effects on Iron Oxide Filled Carbon Nanotubes
Abstract : In this Licentiate Thesis, the properties and effects of iron and iron oxide filled carbon nanotube (Fe-CNT) memories are investigated using experimental characterization and quantum physical theoretical models. Memory devices based on the simple assembly of Fe-CNTs between two metallic contacts are presented as a possible application involving the resistive switching phenomena of this material. READ MORE

2. Crystallization on the Mesoscale : Self-Assembly of Iron Oxide Nanocubes into Mesocrystals
Abstract : Self-assembly of nanoparticles is a promising route to form complex, nanostructured materials with functional properties. Nanoparticle assemblies characterized by a crystallographic alignment of the nanoparticles on the atomic scale, i.e. mesocrystals, are commonly found in nature with outstanding functional and mechanical properties. 3. Nanoplasmonic Enhancement of Photon-to-Electron Conversion in Functionalized Iron Oxide Photoanodes
Abstract : The ever increasing energy demand of modern society clashes with the accelerating depletion of the fossil fuels from which most of this energy is taken today. Moreover, fossil fuels consumption poses a severe threat on the Earth’s environment and climate through global warming. READ MORE

4. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals
Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 5. The Utility of Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Contrast Agents for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the utility of the Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Particle (USPIO), NC100150 Injection for assessment of macro- and microvascular morphology and function using magnetic resonance imaging. The feasibility of NC100150 Injection was tested for the following applications: Coronary angiography, Thrombus detection, Cardiac function, Myocardial perfusion, Assessment of myocardial blood volume and water exchange and finally assessment of endothelial integrity of the myocardium.
